William Lee Romp, age 81, of Vermilion, Ohio passed away on December 11th at Kingston of Vermilion after a short illness.
He was born September 16th, 1944 in Berea and was a lifelong Vermilion resident and businessman.
Bill’s father and mother founded Romp’s Water Port, which include Dairy Dock and Putter Port. Bill started working for the family business in the seventh grade. Bill and Molly, along with his mother, father, and brother Tom, and Tom’s wife Martha Jane, guided the marina through the famed 1969 flood, the devastating 1986 winter flood as well the many economic ups and downs. In 1986 Bill along with his wife Molly became the sole owners until his retirement in the early 2000’s. Bill was known for his attention to detail, his non-stop work ethic, and his love of the marina life.
During the winter months he and Molly enjoyed time away in Mount Dora, Florida. Bill’s hobbies included creating nautical art from both copper and painted wood, building various woodworking projects and mowing the field and Romps. As a former Vermilion Sailor standout graduating in 1962, he also enjoyed watching football, NASCAR races, eating a grilled steak, smoking cigarettes, and drinking a Miller Lite at exactly 5 pm everyday (affectionately known as “Beer O’Clock”).
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Molly (nee Prindle) Romp, daughters, Katy Innes (Tom), Carrie Gabriel (John), Courtney Tuhey (Scott), brother Tom Romp (Martha Jane), grandchildren Molly Angney (Ryan), Kurt Innes (Leia), Joe Gabriel (Derek), Scott Innes (Kaitlyn), Olivia Rednour (Daniel), his great grandchildren Mason, John, Mitchell, Maleea and Sylvie, nieces, PJ Martin, Heather Romp, nephews, Michael Schinski and Robb L. Romp and life long friends fondly known as "Bridge Club".
Bill was proceeded in death by his parents Robb and Laura “Peeps” (nee Schmidt) Romp. Bill’s greatest skill was being an example. In a world of chaos he was an organizer. In a world of half truths he was straightforward and honest. In a world of noise he was calm and quiet. He was a mentor to his employees, and was a true champion of the underdog. We will miss him dearly.
A word of thanks to Julie Pesato, RN Barbie and the Kingston staff for the special care and kindness in his last hours. Our family is grateful.
