Sunbury - William G. Shamp, 95, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025 at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.

Bill was born on July 19, 1930 in Milton, a son of the late Melvin and Anna (Sprenkle) Shamp. On March 16, 1951 he married the former Shirley M. Messner who survives

Bill and Shirley met when they both worked at the Rialto movie theater in Sunbury. He was an usher and she sold popcorn. Bill was a Sunbury Owl, graduating in the class of 1948. On February 21, 1952 he went into the Army serving during the Korean War and was stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, AK until his honorable discharge on February 4, 1954.

Mr. Shamp began working at Big Boys Auto Parts in Sunbury selling auto parts at the counter and also in delivery. He continued his career at various local auto parts stores in the area. Bill loved working on cars and could often be found fixing and cleaning his cars thru the years.

Following retirement, Bill enjoyed working at Cancer Care of Central Pa. He drove a van, taking patients to and from their treatments. He also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, driving patients to their appointments.

Bill was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1957. He spent much time preaching and teaching about the Bible to others. He served as an Elder until his passing at the Northumberland Congregation of

Jehovah's Witnesses.

Bill had a great love of dogs throughout his life. He got his first dog as an adult with Shirley while he was stationed in Alaska. Cheeko was an Alaskan Malamute that he built a crate for and shipped back home when they returned to Sunbury. Bill shared his love of dog companions throughout his life with Shirley. After Cheeko they had Spotty, Lucy, Barney, Skippy, and Belle. He could always be seen walking his dog around the neighborhood. Bill met Skippy and Belle thru Mostly Mutts dog shelter. His love of dogs moved him to become a member and volunteer for Mostly Mutts, helping at events and doing many behind the scenes activities, like folding and organizing T-shirts and sweatshirts when the orders arrived.

The highlight of Bill's life was the birth of his daughter Cindy. She shared his love of cars and often held the flashlight for him while fixing his car or helped him wash and wax his car. He also passed his love of dogs to her as well. Cindy faithfully helped Shirley care for him at home for the past 3 years.

In addition to his wife of 74 years, Mr. Shamp is survived by; his daughter, Cindy L. Shamp of Bloomsburg, one brother, Robert O. Shamp of Sunbury, and one niece, Mollie Hines of Farmersville, TX.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by;

his brother-in-law and three sister-in-laws, Merlin and Edith Messner, Betty Cope, and Elsie Messner and nieces Carol Cope and Barbara Bish.
