Rensselaer- William H. Sheldon, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on February 4, 2025, at the Stratton VA Hospital. Born on March 26, 1944, in Schenectady, NY, the son of the late Warren and Grace Darrigo Sheldon.
Bill was proud to be an Operating Engineer with Local 106 in Albany, where he earned a reputation as an expert crane operator in New York State. He was also a dedicated life member of The Gerald O'Neil American Legion Post 1683, serving as past commander from 1998-2000 and again from 2004-2005. Bill was a charter member of Rensselaer Eagles #4446 and coordinated the Memorial Day parade in Rensselaer for many years. He was known for his quick-witted humor and could always light up a room, bringing a smile to those around him. Bill's expertise as a mechanic was unmatched; he could fix anything that came his way. He also enjoyed being a pool shooter and was an avid bowler.
Family was everything to Bill. He cherished his time spent with loved ones, whether it was camping by the lake or casting a line for fish by the river. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Ann Sheldon, and a proud father to William H. (Cheryl) Sheldon, Jr., Ann M. (Buddy) Sheldon, and Laura T. (Shaun) Sheldon-Diggs. He found immense joy in being a grandfather, leaving a legacy of love through his grandchildren: William Sheldon (Anna), Michael Sheldon, Kristina Sheldon, David Sheldon (Nia), Danny Sheldon (Desiree), Jonathan Diggs, Victoria Brother, and Alexis Diggs. Brother of Jennie N. Clifton Mercer and the late Shirley Peters, Elise Brady, Warren (Mary) Sheldon, Harry Sheldon, Sr. and Vince Sheldon. Bill is also survived by many great grandchildren, niece and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life at his funeral service, which will be held at W.J. Lyons Jr Funeral Home, Inc. on February 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation period from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at the funeral home.
