William F. Smith, age 85, of Russellville, passed away peacefully at his home on December 13. A distinguished attorney, devoted family man, and respected leader in the legal and civic community, Bill Smith leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and professionalism that spanned more than five decades.
Born on September 27, 1940, in Newport, Arkansas, he was the son of Lindell and Finis Smith. He pursued higher education with uncommon dedication, earning a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from Arkansas State University, followed by an additional Master's degree and his Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville School of Law. While in law school, he served on the Editorial Board of the Arkansas Law Review, an early reflection of the scholarly excellence and leadership that would define his legal career.
Mr. Smith practiced law in Russellville beginning in 1970, becoming widely known as an expert in his field and a trusted counselor to generations of clients. He was held in high regard by colleagues throughout Arkansas and was an active member of both the Arkansas Bar Association and the Pope County Bar Association. In addition to his private practice, he served the City of Hector as city attorney, further demonstrating his commitment to public service and the rule of law.
His devotion to community life extended well beyond his legal work. He was a member of Saint John's Catholic Church and served as President of the Saint John's Catholic School Board. He also served on the Pope County Housing Authority and the Russellville Housing Authority, was past President of the Russellville Chamber of Commerce, a past board member of the Russellville Country Club, and a longtime member of the Russellville Rotary Club. Earlier in life, he honorably served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for seven years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anne Johnson of Newport.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Kathy Smith; his sons, Trey Smith of Russellville and Brett Smith and wife Jackie of North Little Rock; and his three cherished grandchildren, Ethan, Cameron, and Connor.
A private family service will be held at Humphrey Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint John's Catholic School or to a charity, memorial, or foundation of the donor's choice in his honor. Following a private committal in the Chapel of Light, cremation arrangements were entrusted to the J. Herman Humphrey Dignity Cremation Center under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
