William Otto Smith, age 83, passed away on January 27, 2026, in Hooper, Utah. He was born on February 9, 1942, in Pulaski, Illinois, to Otto Smith and Myrtle Roods Smith.

William proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he distinguished himself as a sharpshooter in rifle and .45 pistol. His honorable military service included time during the Vietnam era, for which he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge reflecting both his skill, bravery, and dedication.

After his military service, William furthered his education at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Going on to retire from Hill Air Force Base after many years of service in electrical repair. He enjoyed a quiet life and took pleasure in simple things, especially watching television, fishing, and having a conversation with anyone who had a minute, which, brought him peace and contentment.

William married the love of his life, Martha Smith. Together they shared a life rooted in commitment and family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha Smith, daughter, Billie Jo Taylor, sons Frankie Hughes, Richard Hughes, sister Mary Ryan, Grandson Wee Willie Winkle, and Great Grandson Anthony Penalo.

Survived by his children Eldy, Richard John, Carol, Debbie, Gina; His sister Ellen, many grandkids and great grandkids.

William will be remembered for his service to his country, his steady character, and his devotion to his family. His life leaves a legacy of strength, loyalty, and quiet perseverance that will live on in those who knew and loved him. Graveside services will be held on June 12, 2026, at Leavitts Mortuary & Aultorest Memorial Park, Ogden, Utah.
