William Van Keuren Obituary

Published by Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home on Feb. 11, 2017.
WILLIAM CHARLES VAN KEUREN Bill Van Keuren, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed peacefully on February 11, 2017. He was born February 25, 1935, the only child to Robert and Mildred Van Keuren of Worcester, MA. Bill graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1956 with a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. He then began his 37 year engineering career for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT, as a Project Engineer and Program Manager for Mature Engines. The family relocated to Florida in 1976. Bill is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy, and their children William D. and Alexandra Van Keuren (daughter Elizabeth), Peter S. and Kimberly Van Keuren (daughter Lindsay and son Steven), Robert S. and Sandra Van Keuren (sons Christopher, Matthew, and Aaron, grandson Jackson), Susan F. and David Parrish (sons David and Thomas), Debra L. and Robert Gassaway (sons Michael and Adam) and James C. and Monique Van Keuren (son Caleb). Bill was an avid Boston Red Sox fan his entire life. As a young boy, Bill was involved in scouting and later joined the U. S. Air Force, as an adult, serving his country. From youth throughout his life he had many hobbies, including building models, drawing, developing his photos in his darkroom, woodworking, and tinkering with electronics. As a young man, he proudly restored a 1931 Ford Model A with which he drove his wife from their wedding reception to their life together. Bill enjoyed people and had a gift of building lasting relationships with everyone he met. He maintained close ties with his high school buddies, college friends, and Pratt family. Bill always loved history and exposed his children to numerous, educational and historical vacations while living in New England. As a Floridian, he enjoyed a new hobby, boating, which provided numerous new memories for he and his family. After retiring in 1993, Bill and Dorothy enjoyed traveling both domestically and abroad. He had visited 47 different countries, by air, land and sea. He and Dorothy surprised their children and their families with two trips of a lifetime, weeklong cruises to, as he put it, "Build lasting memories." He continually attended his grandchildren's various sporting and academic events throughout their lives. Bill was a lifelong learner and reader. He was an artist who created carvings and free hand paintings. He bought his first computer after retiring which kept him occupied. He also set out to learn the game of golf, in order to spend time with his sons. He enjoyed weekly golf outings with friends and breakfast with his friends and former Pratt colleagues. Eternally the engineer, he always had a project underway and continually developed solutions to any problem he encountered. Bill will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to be in his life. A visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 16 at Taylor-Modeen Funeral Home in Jupiter, FL. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 17, at 11:00 a.m. also at Taylor-Modeen, followed by burial at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that you consider donations in his name to St. Jude Children's Hospital

I learned a long time ago that our Dad wasn't just loved by his family, but also by his friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Dad was an amazing man. All of that was reaffirmed these past couple of weeks as you all came out to show your love and support to our family. Thank you for everything you all have done to show your love for Dad, our Mother and our family. The food, cards, visits, flowers, Mass cards, donations to St. Jude Children's, and love were very appreciated. We will miss him so, but know we will all one day be reunited! ❤

I've never been more proud to be his daughter as I am after seeing what an impact my Dad has made in the community and in the lives of his family and friends. Thanks to everyone for your heartfelt messages, visits, food, prayers, flowers, donations to St. Jude's Children's Research, etc. We really enjoyed being surrounded by you all in these past few weeks. We miss him more than we could ever have believed but his loving spirit lives on in all of us. My family and I appreciate your love and support.

I was saddened by the news of Bill's passing when I heard it from the other members of the P&W Tuesday breakfast group. I worked for Bill for many years and as a boss was one of the better ones I worked for, honest, straight, pleasant and a good friend and mentor. Our pleasant conversations will be missed.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

One Saturday God's angels came
And took Grampie far away
But, in the stillness of the night
As I sat and prayed
I could almost hear him say

Dear Elizabeth, I will miss you
You mean so much to me
But Jesus called me to his side
In Heaven I will be

A place of great beauty
No tears or cares
Only peace, joy, and happiness forever
And love beyond compare

So remember all the good times
Don't think about the sad
Treasure all the special moments
Through all the years we've all always had

And if you trust in Jesus
I can promise this and even more
You'll receive a hug from Grampie
Someday on Heavens Golden Shore

And don't forget go Red Sox and I love you
Grampie

Bill was a great friend. In my wedding party and we doubled dated with the girls in high school.
Golfed with him the last few years and exchanged fond memories.
We will miss him.

Bill and Tom worked together for many years. On a trip to DC together they went to Georgetown for dinner. Bill was not satisfied until they found a restaurant with "littlel windows". He said only the good restaurants had the little windows. He was right.

My memory is of a dinner gathering at Bill and Dottie's house. I was on a rant about calling women who worked at PW "girls". Don Jordan, Bill and Tom were giving me a hard time so we pulled out the dictionary. One word led to another and we were in that dictionary for over an hour. We laughed till we cried. Loved to watch Bill laugh.

I do remember after he retired he got into painting with the guy on PBS with the bush hair.

Hugs to you all - and aan extra one for Dottie.
