William Van Osdel Obituary

Published by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Oct. 25, 2019.
On October 25, 2019, William "Bill" Van Osdel went home to heaven after a six-year journey with cancer. He died on his birthday, ensuring perfect symmetry to his days on earth. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, November 4, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church (1122 Jackson St., Sioux City, IA 51105). Bill was born on October 25, 1948, in Yankton, South Dakota, the son of Merle and Ione (Anderson) Van Osdel. He was raised in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School in 1967. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves and served with the SeaBees until 1972. He then attended trade school and became a piano tuning technician. He spent a year in Harlingen, Texas, before returning to Sioux City in 1974 to work as a carpenter in the family business, Van Osdel Plastering and Drywall. Bill, along with his brother, Frank, became co-owners of the company in 1977 and the company is still in operation today. Bill married Twila Thompson on November 27, 1971, in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple had two daughters, and made their home in Sioux City and celebrated 47 years of marriage. He lived big, loved quietly and wondered at anything masterfully done. He worked hard, so he could spend time deep in his hobbies, of which he had many over the years. Each hobby brought him a new set of friends and provided fun experiences taking him across the country. Throughout the years Bill rode bicycles and motorcycles, played guitar and banjo, sang in the Trinity Lutheran Church choir, excelled at woodworking, and shot hunter and varmint bench rest in various competitions. He took special delight in his grandkids, never met a stranger, and could share a story with anyone. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife Twila; daughter Rachel Porter and her husband, Jeremy, and their children, Harrison, Henry and Hazel, all of Urbandale, Iowa; daughter, Jess Griffin and her husband, Jimmy, of Marion, Iowa; brother, Dave Van Osdel, of Sioux City, Iowa; brothers-in-law Marvin Thompson and Donnie Thompson, both of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law Steven Thompson of Ft. Pierre, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Connie (Wally) Case of Minnetonka, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Gloria Thompson of Wall Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law, Nancy Duckett of Rosenberg, Texas; sister-in-law Dianna Van Osdel of Sioux City, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Ione; his brother, Frank; an infant brother; father-in-law Lloyd Thompson and his wife Nancy; mother-in-law Alice Thompson; sister-in-law Donette Thompson; and brother-in-law Rocky Duckett. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church of Sioux City, Iowa or Mayo Clinic Cancer Research of Rochester, Minnesota.

My husband and I were looking up his brother's obituary and found Bill's. He looks like my husband's father, Jim Van Osdel, who also was in the Navy Seabees and had a family drywall business in Orange County, CA! Amazing!

You reach an age when people you meet always remind you of someone else you've known. No one has "reminded" me of Bill (The Fox). He was beautifully, uniquely himself. I miss him.

Bill and I must have been friends...we went to the same church and the name is so familiar to me. I'm saddened that I can't remember him exactly, though I should. He and I were the same age. I went to St. Paul Lutheran school and took confirmation classes at St. Paul's. I must get out my confirmation picture as I'm sure we were in the same class.I'm sorry for the family's loss. I graduated in 1966, but attended Central off and on as I moved away from Sioux City in 1964. I attended the first half of 10th grade and first half of 12th grade there. I would appreciate hearing from anyone...my email is [email protected].

How do you replace a memory with a memory. This man taught me more about construction than anyone knows. May he rest in peace and may his songs always be sung.

Best wishes Bill,

We are so sorry for your loss. Bill provided for you and loved you very much. I will always remember playing Pictionary at our Holiday family get togethers we laughed so much.

When I first met Bill(Fox), I mistook his gentle nature for sarcasm. I'm he's been like my older brother, I've loved and admired him but was terrible about staying in touch. I've been influenced by Bill since he first introduced me to the music of Bob Dylan. I followed Bill into the Naval Reserves, bought an Audi Super 90 when I got out, and treasured my Guild guitar. The first gift Joan and I shared after we got married was a canoe, and he made sure we had the right paddles. Fox always was and will be a class act, treasure your memories. I am sorry for your loss.

Why me Lord - what have I ever done to deserve even one of the pleasures I've known? Knowing and traveling with Bill, was one of those pleasures (thank U Kris Kristofferson).
Wild Bill, as he was known by his benchrest shooting peers, was an inspiration, and one of the most interesting people I've known. He never complained. When he talked of the, Buffalos (his grand sons), the love a pride he exuded was contagious - just an exceptional person. A GREAT competitor: gracious in defeat an humble in victory. Bill demanded and exemplified the best - surely, for him, the gates of heaven are open wide. God bless Bill's grieving family - he will be sorely missed.

My mind has travelled back to when Bill, Twila, Louie and I would spend every Friday and Saturday night playing scrabble, yahtzee or just sitting around talking. I'll never forget the camping trip we all went on and Bill got strep throat and could barely get out of the tent!!! Wonderful memories I have of the 70's. Twila, I am so sorry for your loss and please know that I am thinking of you and your family. Love, Louann
