Mass of Christian Burial for William Conrad "Willie" Walterscheid, age 88, of Muenster was held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rosary and Vigil was held at 6:45 PM on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Casey Walterscheid, Dustin Walterscheid, Tyler Walterscheid, Jordan Walterscheid, Bret Walterscheid, Lee Walterscheid, Garrett Walterscheid, and Natalie Walterscheid. Willie passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024.
Willie was born December 1, 1935 to Al and Catherine "Katie" Walterscheid. He was the third of five children. His siblings were Virginia "Ginny" Schneider, Dorothy "Dot" Endres, Carl "Boobie" Walterscheid and Mary Catherine Acker. He lived most of his young life in a beautiful rock home built by his father that later became Rohmer's Restaurant. He attended Sacred Heart School, and excelled in all sports, especially baseball and football. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1954. He met the one and only Queenie Homsley at a VFW dance she was not supposed to attend. She is unsure if it was how handsome and nice he was or his 1956 Black & White Ford Fairlane that first drew her attention. Their love was ever-present even until the end. Some of Willie's last words to her were "I love you more". Willie was drafted into the Army in 1956 and reported to Fort Carson, Colorado. His official duty in the Army was as a Dispersing Agent, requiring him on the 1st and 15th of every month to set up in the Post Gymnasium, counting money to pay each soldier. The rest of his time in the Army was spent playing baseball. He was a heck of a ball player. So good that he was invited to try out for the St Louis Cardinals organization, but his dad told him that was no way to raise a family.
When his time was up in the Army, he came home to Muenster in 1958 and started Walterscheid Oil Company. He bought a farm, a beautiful place north of Muenster on the Red River. To him, this place was special. It showcased his years of hard work and was his place of solitude as well as his place to share with his family. He believed in serving his community. He and Adam Wolf brought Little League Baseball to Muenster. He also served as a Jaycee, a Scout Master, a member of the school board, the city council, and was the voice of Muenster Hornet football for 20 years. They were blessed with two sons, Terry, who is married to Dianne Kralicke and Kim who is married to Lisa Trubenbach, and a daughter Christie who died as an infant and is now reunited with her father. Queenie and Willie's pride and joy are their 8 grandchildren: Casey, Dustin, Tyler, Jordan, Bret, Lee, Garrett, and Natalie. They are also blessed with 13 Great Grandchildren. Willie took his grandchildren everywhere with him. From golfing, to fishing, to hunting, to the VFW, to almost daily trips to the Farm. He did not care if they cramped his style or his truck, he did not seem to mind that he would spend more time untangling their lines and lures than actually fishing himself.
Willie and his best friends went Elk hunting for many years, always hoping but falling short of that top draw hunt in the prime spots of Colorado. They were finally selected just 4 years ago for the hunt of a lifetime in unit 61, outside of Nucla (NUKE-LA) Colorado. While in Colorado, the young guide simply did not believe these old men could shoot and insisted they prove it. Willie, Frankie and Jerry Hess each set up, plinking the metal targets from 250 yards and after Frankie hit his at 500 plus yards, the guide sat silent. Sensing his shock, Willie told him, "We may be old and crippled, but I promise you we can shoot." And shoot they did, each knocking down an elk on that trip.
He worked hard his entire life. Starting in his father's machine shop at an early age to his own business and his farm. He put each of his grandchildren to work and instilled that value in them all. He was devoted to Queenie for 68 years. He taught his family how to love in how he loved each of them, with a tenacity and spirit so deep and real. This lesson of love is what makes his legacy so strong and one that will continue on. Death ends a life. It does not end a relationship. It does not erase the memories and the lessons learned. We will keep his legacy alive by passing those on, by passing that love on. There's a beauty in the simple things in life. It's those things we do not always recognize in the moment. From Willie, his family is aware of that beauty, the smell of Queenie cooking eggs and bacon, a day fishing with someone you love, the peacefulness of an early morning, the first sip of a cold drink on a hot Texas day, friends that are like family, family that are like friends, and a child's small hand held up to the finest man we've ever known.
Willie is survived by his wife: Queenie Walterscheid; children: Terry and wife Dianne Walterscheid, and Kim and Lisa Walterscheid; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Pat (Hamilton) Walterscheid, and Barbara (Homsley) Traweek; and many extended family and friends.
Preceding Willie in death are his parents Alois and Catherine Walterscheid; brother Carl Walterscheid; sisters Ginny Schneider, Dorothy Endres and Mary Acher; and child Christie Walterscheid.

I too met Willie through an interest in vintage gas pumps and my friendship with Ken Bruce.
I enjoyed my visits with he and Terry over the years.
He was a good man who I know will be missed by his family, friends and community.
Peace

I rememeber the first time I met him, I had found an old gas pump on a farm just East of town on highway 82. The owner of the farm said that the pump belonged to Mr. Walterscheid. He told me where i could find him so I drove back into town. I pulled into his business and Willie came to the door to greet me with a firm handshake. He asked what he could do for me???? I responded with " I saw an old gas pump alongside a farm house just East of here. The gentleman told me it was yours." Willie then asked me why I was interested in it??? I had just begun to start collecting and restoring them. Plus my Grandfather worked for a visual gas pump mfg in St Louis Missouri for many years. He then told me a story about how he had a couple on the backside of his business but they had been stolen a few weeks early. Without much hesitation he did offer the pump to me for a fair price. To this day I still enjoy that pump.
Then over the next 20 years Willie and Terry would be kind enough to share more pumps with me. I did several very old visual gas pumps for Wille which are at his home currently displayed. He was always more than fair with me. I will miss our relationship!!
