Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and vigil be held at 6:30 PM on Friday, May 9, 2025 at Scott Funeral Home in Muenster. Mrs. Walterscheid passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025 at Wesley House Assisted Living in Gainesville, Texas. Born in Pilot Point, Texas, on July 11, 1935, she was the third of ten children born to John and Annie (Blumberg) Pelzel, Sr. Evelyn's life was defined by her deep commitment to family, faith, and service.
Evelyn's early years were shaped by a strong connection to those around her. As a young girl, she helped her parents by raising chickens, picking cotton, cooking, cleaning, and caring for her siblings. Her family fondly remembers her homemade potato chips as being the best they ever ate. During her high school years, she was twice honored as Homecoming Queen, first at Tioga High School in ninth grade and later at Pilot Point High School as an eleventh grader, a reflection of her lively spirit and warm personality. She completed her education at Pilot Point High School, graduating in 1953.
On May 12, 1955, Evelyn married her beloved husband, Donald G. Walterscheid, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Pilot Point. Together, they built a home and life in
Muenster, Texas, where they lived for their entire marriage.
After high school, Evelyn worked a short time as a clerk typist in Dallas. After her marriage, she devoted herself to public service, working at the Cooke County Courthouse for close to 45 years. Her dedication and skill in her role led her to become the County's first female County Clerk, a position she held from 1995 to 2002. Evelyn retired on December 31, 2002, leaving a lasting impact on the county's administration. She always spoke fondly of those she worked with at the Courthouse.
Beyond her professional life, she had an undeniable gift in the kitchen, always baking and cooking full meals for her family, which they looked forward to on many Saturdays and Sundays. Some of their favorite foods included smothered steak, crispy homemade pancakes, flavorful rice, kuchen and peach flip. An avid reader, she subscribed to a wide variety of magazines, finding pleasure in each page. Her biggest hobby was crocheting beautiful afghans, which she often lovingly gifted to family and friends.
Throughout her life, Evelyn faced numerous heartaches, including the loss of twin daughters, Cheryl and Carol, at birth on May 10, 1956 (which happens to be the date of her funeral), her husband Donnie on June 21, 2002, and her only son, Craig Donald, on March 8, 2005. Despite these losses, she remained resilient, her faith never faltering. She cared for Donnie, who had diabetes from an early age, with boundless devotion, contributing to his long life. Evelyn embraced Donna Trubenbach, Craig's wife, as the daughter she never had, and she adored her two grandchildren, Ashley Dawn (Walterscheid) Fisher (born November 3, 1985) and Chad Donald Walterscheid (born March 23, 1993, who affectionately knew her as "Grammie."
Evelyn was known for her unshakable faith, often finding comfort in her devotion to Saint Therese, receiving roses at significant moments that reaffirmed her belief that her prayers were being heard. She instilled strong values of faith in her son and daughter-in-law, always finding a way to call and gently remind them of holy days of obligation. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Cooke County Democratic Party and the VFW Auxiliary.
Despite declining health and the loss of her eyesight, she continued to find joy in the small things, particularly her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her weekly routine remained consistent, and she took great pride in her appearance. Even after she stopped driving, her sister and dear friend, Jenny Dennis, lovingly ensured she didn't miss her Friday hair appointments, as well as trips for groceries and meals out. Following her move to Wesley House, Jenny's faithful Friday visits continued. Her home reflected her perfectionist nature, always immaculate, even as she aged.
In 2020, after a stroke, Evelyn moved to Wesley House Assisted Living in Gainesville, Texas.
Evelyn cherished her privacy, yet her heart overflowed with a deep and abiding love. Her absence leaves a void that echoes the profound impact she had on our lives, and she will be deeply and forever missed.
Left to cherish her memory is daughter-in-law, Donna (Trubenbach-Walterscheid) Endres; grandchildren Ashley & husband Coy Fisher and Chad & wife, Kylie Walterscheid. Great grandchildren including Lynzie & Reese Fisher; Josie, Lillian, Carson & Isabella Walterscheid, all of
Muenster, Texas. Her siblings Marilyn & Donald Weber of Pilot Point, Texas; Virginia (Jenny) & Douglas Dennis of Lindsay, Texas and Harold & Sandy Pelzel of Canton, Georgia and sisters-in-law Emma Pelzel, Marge Sicking, Linda Walterscheid and numerous nieces and nephews.
