Obituary for William Thomas (Tom) Ward
March 22, 1942 - January 1, 2026
William Thomas (Tom) Ward graced this world with his curious spirit from the day that he was born on March 22, 1942 in Evanston, Illinois. He departed peacefully on January 1, 2026 in the Sellers Community of Southern Mississippi.
Tom’s adult journey began when he joined the Air force after graduating Evanston Township high school outside of Chicago, Illinois. He was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi which led to his meeting the love of his life, Carolyn Ann (Ann) Dedeaux. They were married on July 17, 1964 followed by the birth of their only daughter exactly one year later on July 17, 1965. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows on July 17, 2025.
Tom was a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas with a Masters Degree in Science Management and Administrative Services. He continued a lifelong commitment to learning andhigher education by attending classes throughout his life.
Tom’s vibrant personality was a gift. He could crack a joke in any situation with the ability to make conversation with anyone. His kindness, intelligence and vivacious charm left an indelible mark on all of the hearts that knew him. He had a profound love of classic cars and loved participating in car shows and club trips. He had many friends throughout his community. Tom had a deep commitment to his faith, church and is a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Most cherished were the joyful hours spent with his family. He is survived by wife, Ann Dedeaux Ward, daughter, Cindy Nehlsen and son-in-law Ken Nehlsen, his Granddaughters Paige Nehlsen (Elliott Kravits) and Claire Nehlsen, Grandson Evan Nehlsen (Kaufula Ame). Brother-in-Law Lester Billy Dedeaux (Janice) and Sister-In-Law Charlene Dedeaux Frank. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is reunited in death with his mother Lillian Szczepaniak and father Wilbur Thomas Ward.
Services will be held at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church in Perkinston, Mississippi on Friday, January 9. Visitation will be held from 9am-11am at the church followed by a full Catholic Mass at 11am. Graveside service will be conducted at Necaise Crossing Cemetery in Perkinston, Mississippi at 12pm.
