Willie Lee Smith, Jr., son of the late Willie Smith, Sr. and Ethel Clark, was born in Moultrie, Georgia on August 5, 1953.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Colquitt County, graduating from Colquitt County High School. During his high school years, having developed a passion for music, he played in the band and was active in various other student-centered activities and events. Willie continued his education at Albany State College where he excelled in his chosen field of study and was a member of the Golden Rams marching band.
Ready to serve his country, Willie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to various posts in the US; served with distinction; and received numerous commendations as he advanced through the military ranks. At the close of his tours of duty, he was honorably discharged and returned to civilian life.
Over the years, Willie took great pride in the services that he provided with the United States Postal Service. He was a very conscientious employee whose career was defined by hard work and unquestionable integrity. For more than 30 years, he worked untiringly to meet and maintain high quality standards until his retirement. In later years, he joined the ranks of security officers at Miller Coors and continued his exceptional work record until his health declined.
Willie believed strongly in family ties and responsibilities and he took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with them. Not only was he a devoted father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, and cousin, but a loyal friend as well. His gentle spirit drew many to him and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. He had a great sense of humor; could always find the silver lining in any situation; and he saw all people as important and worthy of friendship and compassion. Family and friends were paramount in his life and he loved them dearly.
In his leisure, he enjoyed all sports; however, his all-time favorite was baseball season and his famous team-the Atlanta Braves. If ever in his presence, you definitely had to cheer for the Braves. He will be remembered for his kindness to all people-family, friends, and strangers.
On March 1, 2024, David transitioned from this earthly realm to eternal peace and rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grussinea Bell Smith; and two brothers, Demetrius Smith and Travis Smith.
Memories of his life will forever be celebrated by his children, Tonya L. Smith and Christopher A. Smith of Albany, GA; siblings, Angela Smith and Anthony Smith; grandchildren, Austin Powell, Javain Dixon, Matthew Stewart, DeMarcus Cantrell, and Kambria Cantrell; great grandchildren, Khaci, Ja'Nyla, Madison, and Khloe; his aunt, Mae (Moses) Butler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friend.
