Mr. Willie Smoot, known affectionately as "Chill Will," departed this life on February 16, 2026, in
Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by the warmth of his family. Born on August 5, 1952, in
Talladega, Alabama, he was the beloved son of Nathaniel Smoot and Flossie Cameron Smoot.
Willie was a beacon of love and joy, having accepted Christ at an early age and uniting with the Africa Missionary Baptist Church, where his faith flourished throughout his life. A proud graduate of Winterboro High School, he dedicated his early years to the textile industry before founding Willie Smoot and Company Construction, where he poured his heart into building homes and fostering community connections through his skilled craftsmanship.
Endlessly resilient, Willie faced life's challenges with a spirit that remained undaunted, even humorously attempting to fix a water leak in his hospital room as if to remind us all of his indomitable will. He had a passion for football, his heart swelling with pride as he cheered for the Auburn Tigers, a testament to his lively spirit and enduring love for the game. A man of humor and heart, Willie loved to entertain and share jovial moments with family and friends. He was a humble soul whose love resonated deeply within his family. Willie left an indelible mark in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
On that peaceful Monday morning, in a gentle moment filled with love, Willie traded his earthly labor for eternal rest, embracing the arms of his parents Nathaniel and Flossie Smoot, Sr. and brothers, James "Sugarman" Simmons and Bobbie Joe Simmons in the presence of peace. He leaves behind a vibrant legacy, cherished and celebrated by his two children, Monzel Smoot and Tasha Smoot. He is lovingly remembered by his brothers, including Nathaniel Smoot, Jr., Larry (Cassandra) Smoot, Milton (Ethel) Smoot, Wendell Smoot, Brinkley (Tongule) Smoot, Huntley (Rochell) Smoot, and Jerry Gooden; sisters, Mary (Rev. Mitchell) Welch, Catherine Smoot, Gloria (Eddie) Wilson, Glenda T. Smoot, and Rhonda (Rev. Terry) Wilson. Willie's legacy further expands to his grandchildren, Zaria Morgan, Kiara Smoot, Koren Smoot, Tatyana Seals, and Zayion Seals, as well as his great-grandchildren, Jaile Pruitt and Kaire West; aunts, Winnie B. Cameron and Marilyn Cameron; sisters-in-law, Fannie Simmons, and Minnie Simmons; along with a vast network of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry his love and laughter in their hearts forever.
As we mourn the loss of Willie Smoot, let us also rejoice in the moments we were privileged to share with him. His spirit lives on in our hearts, forever inspiring us to embrace life with laughter, love, and unwavering faith.
In the words of his son who loved him dearly, "My father taught me how to stand strong, love deeply, and keep going even when life gets hard. His legacy lives on through us. Everything good in me carries a piece of my dad." Willie showed us the true meaning of integrity, hard work, and love without limits. He may have departed from our sight, but he will never leave our hearts.
