Wilma Porter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2009.
PORTER - Wilma Holmes Porter passed away on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009 due to the effects of Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lyle Porter, who faithfully visited her three times a day during her illness. Wilma is also survived by five children: Bruce Porter and wife, Susan; Rebecca Rogers and husband, Gary; Pamela Hamblin and husband, Randy; Carolyn Brustad and husband, Roger; and Susan Grenfell and husband, Darrin. She leaves a posterity of nineteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. One brother also survives her: Kenley Holmes of Spokane, Washington. Wilma was born in Liberty, Utah, to Irma and Edgar Holmes. She was the fifth of seven children. She and Lyle moved to Albuquerque shortly after their marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on July 21, 1951. Lyle began work at Sandia National Laboratories, where he worked until retirement. As a result of this employment, Wilma was able to live in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Europe, where they traveled extensively. Wilma loved music very much and served as LDS ward music chairman. She often led local LDS church choirs. She and Lyle served an LDS mission for a year on Temple Square in Salt Lake City. The family is grateful to the staff at The Cottages, an Alzheimer's home, where she spent the last years of her life. She is now at peace and reunited with her parents. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 15, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bear Canyon Ward, 11750 San Victorio Avenue, NE. Bishop Derek Lines officiating. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. before the funeral. Please visit our online guestbook for Wilma at RememberTheirStory.com
