Wilma Smith Obituary

In Loving Memory of Wilma Smith

September 27, 1935 - December 17, 2025

Wilma Smith, age 90, of Toledo, Ohio, peacefully transitioned on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, while in the memory care unit at Glass Peaks in Toledo. Wilma lived a life marked by deep faith, steady service, and a love that showed up in real ways-especially for her family. Wilma was born on September 27, 1935, in Toledo to Roy and Beulah Quinn. She graduated from Woodward High School, attended college, and went on to build a respected career as a chemist. Wilma was a 30-year employee of L&F Chemical Company in Toledo and retired in 1996. Her work reflected her intelligence, determination, and quiet excellence.

From childhood, Wilma's foundation was her faith. She was saved at age 12 and became a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, where she served faithfully and without hesitation. In the 1980s, she became a member of First Church of God in Toledo, continuing a life of devotion and ministry. She was active in the church's "Saved to Serve" group and loved uplifting others-always encouraging people to serve, give, and stay grounded in God.

Wilma had a gift for making people feel cared for. She was great in the kitchen, known for her cobblers and her unforgettable squash pie-desserts that became part of family tradition. But beyond what she made in the kitchen, her greatest "work" was what she poured into the people she loved.

Wilma was united in marriage to Melvin E. Smith, her devoted husband of 50 years. Together they built a home anchored in love, discipline, and loyalty. After Melvin's passing, Wilma carried his memory with honor, and she now rests with him in peace.

Wilma's legacy also includes the priceless role she played as a mother-figure. With a heart that did not hesitate, she took in her granddaughter, Consuela (Dawn) Langston, as an infant and raised her into adulthood-providing a home, guidance, structure, and unconditional love. That act of love and sacrifice is one of the clearest reflections of who Wilma was: steady, protective, faithful, and deeply nurturing.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin E. Smith; her daughter, Michelle Langston; stepdaughter, Connie Jelks Perryman; stepsons, Joseph Smith and Kenneth Smith; her beloved siblings, Pastor Alberta Mae (Quinn) Witcher, Frances Johnson, Madeline Carter, Roy Quinn, Gerald Quinn, James Quinn; and her lifelong friend, Kathy (Charles) Taylor. She leaves to cherish her memory her stepsons, Melvin Smith Jr. and Kevin Flemming; her loving sisters, Constance Burton, Leona Murrell, and Donzella Clark; brothers, Charles (Martha) Quinn, David (Donzella) Quinn, and Kermit Quinn; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, a myriad of nieces and nephews, her church family, and many friends whose lives were blessed by her presence.

Family hour for visitation will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at The First Church of God, 3016 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo, Ohio, where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Services will be followed by entombment at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo, Ohio.

Wilma Smith will be remembered as a woman of faith, a servant at heart, and a true family pillar-someone who loved deeply, gave freely, and raised up others through her steadfast care. Her love lives on-through every life she touched and every generation she helped shape.
