Winfred Walker Chilton

Winfred Walker "Winnie" Chilton, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on February 4, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 5, 1940, and lived a life defined by service, dedication, and deep love for his family and community.

Winnie proudly served his country in the Army National Guard and dedicated his professional life to public service as a retired Assistant Fire Chief with the Marine Corps Base Quantico Fire Department. Over the years, he inspired countless individuals to pursue careers in the fire service, leaving a lasting legacy of mentorship, leadership, and integrity. He was also a past member of the Knights of Pythias.

Beyond his service, Winnie was deeply involved in his community. He coached Little League baseball for many years and served as an umpire, shaping young athletes both on and off the field. An avid outdoorsman, he found peace and joy in hunting and fishing, especially when shared with family and friends.

Winnie will be remembered for his infectious smile, quick wit, and trademark stubbornness-all parts of seeing life his way. No matter the weather or the score, you could always count on him to be in the stands, proudly cheering on his grandsons at their ball games.

His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence, love, and laughter will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia "Ginny" Chilton; his sons, Tim Chilton and Kevin (Terrina) Chilton; his grandsons, Walker (Maggie) Chilton, Kaleb Chilton, Spencer Chilton, and Camden Chilton; his cherished great-granddaughter, Kimber Chilton; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Winnie was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Chilton; his brothers, Richard (Nancy) Chilton and George (Clara) Chilton; his sister, Patricia (Pat) Craft; and his grandson, Daren "DJ" Chilton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
