Life of Love and Light: Remembering Winnie Dell Carson Ovenden
Winnie Dell Carson Ovenden, a beacon of joy, faith, and unconditional love, was called home on September 24, 2025, in
Kerrville, Texas. At 90, she leaves behind a legacy of devotion and radiant positivity. Born on October 18, 1934, in Del Rio, Texas, she was the beloved daughter of Charles and Lura Carson.
Winnie met her soulmate, Ernest ''Ernie'' Ovenden, and they began their beautiful journey, marrying on August 28, 1953. Their marriage of 72 years was a testament to enduring love. With Ernie serving in the Navy, Winnie chose to dedicate her life to her home and family, pouring all her energy into being a cherished stay-at-home mother.
She was preceded in heaven by her devoted husband, Ernie, and their precious daughter, Lynda Lee. She also joins her parents and her brother, Charles Carson.
Winnie was known throughout her life for her effervescent spirit and deep, abiding faith. She was the very definition of optimism, inspiring everyone she met with her "positive way of thinking." A fierce "prayer warrior," she generously shared her spiritual strength, love, and time, always willing to lift up those in need.
A true lover of God's creations, she found peace and pleasure in nature and gardening. She expressed her creativity through her passion for collecting and sharing antiques, enjoying a space in local shops for many years. For 68 years, Winnie was a warm, familiar presence in Rockport, Texas, a community she loved deeply and served selflessly. As her grandson Matthew movingly expressed, "Heaven gained a true angel."
She leaves behind a family who adored her and will forever cherish her loving spirit: her daughter, Valerie Oldfather Hiller and her husband, Dolph; and her son, Vic Ovenden and his wife, Janet. Winnie was the devoted grandmother of Eric Carter Oldfather and his wife, Sarah, and Matthew Carson Oldfather. She was also the delighted great-grandmother of William Bennett Oldfather, and the newest edition, Thomas Hudson Oldfather. She is fondly remembered by her nephews, Ron, Mark, and Craig Carson, and her dear sister-in-law, Loretta Anderson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on her birthday, October 18, 2025, at 12:00 noon at the Unity Church of Rockport. This special day will also honor her late husband, Ernie, who passed earlier this year on April 16, 2025. Following the service, the family invites friends to an after-party at the Rockport Yacht Club. A private graveside service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Unity Church of Rockport, Texas.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff and compassionate caregivers who supported Winnie during her final months. Sincere thanks are extended to Trinity Hospice of Corpus Christi, including Karen, Lane, and Charlotte, and to Peterson Hospice of Kerrville, including Shannon, Jaime, Don, and Sarah. They are also deeply grateful for the devoted care provided by Kathy Reyna, her Rockport caregiver, as well as the team at Caring Senior Services of Kerrville, including Rick, Larry, and Kim. A special thank you is extended to the staff at Juniper Sage Park Senior Living Facility in Kerrville for their outstanding care and kindness.
