Winnifred "Winnie" Doerfer
August 17, 1936 – July 26, 2025
Winnifred "Winnie" Doerfer, 88, passed away peacefully at home on July 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Flint, Michigan, on August 17, 1936, Winnie lived a life grounded in love, kindness, and connection. For more than 67 years, she shared a devoted and joyful marriage with her beloved husband, Joseph "Joe" Doerfer. Together, they built not just a home but a legacy-one defined by warmth, generosity, and steadfast love that will carry on through generations.
Winnie was a devoted mother to Mary Jo Chmielewski (Gary), Robert Doerfer, the late Susan Doerfer, and Jean Depoorter (Barry). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Kelly Milewski (Chris), Robert Chmielewski (David), Tim Chmielewski, Sarah Chmielewski, Alex Dirck (Kyle), the late Kevin Depoorter, Elizabeth Depoorter (Robert), Kayla Depoorter (Nathaniel), and Erica Depoorter. Her joy only grew as she became a great-grandmother to Anthony, Daniel, and James Milewski; Ianto and Illiana Depoorter; Evea Parker; Leilani Chmielewski; Elias and Isaiah Zinke; and Tilly and Arlo Dirck. She was also a cherished sister to Bonnie Jaeger and the late Shirley "Toot" Rohde.
Winnie had a natural gift for making others feel welcome. As a dedicated homemaker, she made sure anyone who entered her home was greeted with a warm meal, a kind word, and a genuine smile. She and Joe extended that same hospitality to exchange students from around the world, building lifelong relationships and embracing the beauty of shared culture and experience.
After nearly 30 years in Wisconsin, Winnie and Joe settled in Moline, Illinois where she lovingly embraced her role as "Grama." She was known for life's little joys-sharing half a stick of Doublemint gum with her grandchildren, writing witty and heartfelt poems for family milestones, and never missing a moment to make someone feel special.
Winnie's gentle spirit and generous heart endeared her to many. She formed lifelong friendships, especially through her love of quilting. The quilts she made-stitched with care and shared with love-continue to warm homes across her family and community. Many were also donated to causes close to her heart, including the Linus Project and support services for single mothers in Tucson. She also gave her time and care to Sun City's Charity Works group, contributing to important efforts like the Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse.
Family was the heart of Winnie's world. She found joy in simple moments: coffee on the patio, laughter around the kitchen table, a swing in the backyard, or a glass of wine shared in good company. She never forgot a birthday, always celebrated life's milestones, and was known for her warmth, playfulness, and unmistakable laugh.
Winnie's legacy is one of love, strength, compassion, and joy. Her absence leaves a deep void, but her spirit lives on in the many lives she touched, the traditions she inspired, and the love she gave so freely.
A celebration of Winnie's life will be held on Sunday, August 17, from 1:00–3:30 PM at the Activity Center of Sun City, 1495 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd.,
Oro Valley, AZ, in the Navajo Community Room.
In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to offer support, donations are being accepted to assist Joe Doerfer as he navigates this time of transition. Contributions will help cover unexpected expenses and provide comfort as he begins this next chapter without his beloved wife.
"To know her was to be loved by her."
