Edward "Spider" Rossi
1924 - 2021
Edward "Spider" Rossi, passed away peacefully January 1, 2021, at the age of 96.
Ed Rossi was born February 2, 1924 in Napa, CA to Louie and Mary Rossi. He played and coached for the Napa Merchants fast pitch softball team. This is where he was nicknamed "Spider". He inherited this nickname by his fellow teammates because he was so fast running from home plate to first base that all you could see was just his arms and legs and a tiny torso. On a good day Ed weighed in at 95 pounds and stood at 5 ft. tall. He went on to coach girls' softball teams at Kiwanis Park for 20 years with his late wife Emma winning numerous championships. His philosophy was play small ball and put pressure on the defense. Ed enjoyed watching his three sons play sports and was always there to play catch with them and give advice on how to play better. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved doing these things with Emma and his three sons. Ed also enjoyed watching his youngest son Allen coach baseball for the Napa Joe DiMaggio League and at Justin Siena High School. Ed rarely missed a game and was his son's biggest fan and would usually comment after the game "You need to bunt more".
Ed was a parishioner and usher at St. Johns Catholic Church in Napa CA.
Ed also attended St. Johns Catholic Elementary and was an alter server when he was a young boy. He went on to Napa High School and after graduating, he joined the Navy where he was a cook on Naval Ships. Ed worked and retired from Ray Cavagnaros Budweiser Company after 35 yrs. of service. Ed enjoyed and loved his family. You could always catch Ed when at home listening or watching the SF Giants, the SF 49ers and the Golden State Warriors.
He and Emma adored their grandchildren and they were known for watching them every school holiday, parent date nights, the BEST New Year Eve parties ever in their jammies camping out in the living room and summer vacations. Heather and Madilyn will always remember Sunday dinners at Grandma and Grandpas, mashed potatoes, green spaghetti and Grandpas homemade spaghetti sauce. Long summer days swimming in the backyard pool, Eggo's for breakfast followed by the Price is right, sandwiches and sweet iced tea for lunch and curling up with Grandma or Grandpa and watching unsolved mysteries, however, most of all we all remember the love from both Ed and Emma! We love and miss you brother, Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa.
Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife Emma, his mother Mary and his father Louie and brother Marvin. He is survived by his two sisters, Bernadine, Geraldine, daughters Esther, Debbie, three sons David, Dale and Allen, grandchildren Madilyn, Buddy, Cameron, Dustin, Nicholas and Heather, great grandson Matthew, daughter in laws Michele (Allen) and Pam (David), son in law Steven (Debbie), and many nieces and nephews.
Ed will be missed but never forgotten. His legacy will live on forever!

Spider played baseball against our dad.. Frank was on the Saint Helena team and they played against Napa. Years later, while I worked in a grocery store, Spider came in and introduced himself to me.He had so many funny stories that I ran home and told my dad. Yes he remembered him. They had a short time to reconnect. What a nice man Spider was .We were all blessed to have him in our lives.

I will never forget Spider Rossi as he coached us to victory out at Kiwanas Park. Those were the days. His small ball proved to work and I will never forget the signal to bunt! Good memories of a great man. RIP Spider. Love to the whole family!

I worked with Ed when he was at Cavagnaro's. He was always playing jokes on me, smiling, laughing. He was a hard worker, and did talk a lot about his sons and baseball. RIP Eddie *as I used to call him*
