Jerome Mautner Obituary

Jerome Jay "Jerry" Mautner died on March 5, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. An uncompromising man, he fought tenaciously for truth and justice his entire life, and against cancer at its end.

Jerry Mautner was born in November 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, to Dr. Herman E. & Estelle M.Mautner (Freedburg). He attended Emory University in Atlanta where he met and married Elizabeth Ellis. Together they moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where son Michael was born and Jerry graduated from Boston University Law School. After a couple of years back in Brooklyn, and then Mamaroneck, New York, where son David was born, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which employed Jerry as a fraud investigator, moved the family to the San Francisco Bay area. While Jerry worked in the City, the couple lived in Terra Linda, where sons James and Mark were born.

In 1974, Jerry took the California Bar Exam. He was hired by the Solano County D.A. that same year, and he and Elizabeth began looking at houses in the region around Fairfield. They settled on Napa and, in 1975, bought the home where they both lived the for rest of their lives and raised their boys, son John's birth completing their brood a year later.

In 1982, Jerry ran for and was elected District Attorney of Napa County. A political novice, Jerry's election surprised some, but delighted the many who met and canvassed for him in what was a truly grassroots effort.

Jerry's vision of the criminal justice system sometimes frustrated other other local officials, elected and appointed, and led some local media to question his sincerity. Jerry's response to this, most of the time, was to double down and soldier on. His approach remained popular enough that he was reelected without opposition in 1986.

In 1990, a challenger emerged from within his office and Jerry was defeated for reelection. In the six months between the election and the end of Jerry's term, he turned down a couple of potentially lucrative offers to join criminal defense practices. Instead, Jerry went to the Sonoma County D.A. and became once again a mid-level line deputy D.A., absorbing a substantial reduction in pay. Years of frugality on his and Elizabeth's part meant the family hardly noticed.

In 2004, Jerry retired from the Sonoma D.A.'s Office. He and Elizabeth traveled, and enjoyed their grandchildren.

Jerry moved his mother to Napa from Florida in 2006 and assisted her with her affairs until her death in 2018. In that same year, Elizabeth became seriously ill and Jerry became her primary caregiver until her death in 2021. These were roles Jerry had never prepared for, but embraced.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Michael (Adriana), James (Amy), Mark (Jessica), and John (Ami) -- son David died in 1994 -- nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. We will not see his like again. Jerome Jay Mautner

Jerry was a great guy and a super D.A. He knew the law better than anyone in the office and was tough on criminals. In addition he had a great sense of humor. It was a pleasure to work for him.

As a Public Defender in Sonoma County I worked many cases where Mr Mautner was the DA. Mr. Mautner had a personal sense of justice and an ability to see the person and not merely the crime. Mr Mautner´s knowledge of the law was nearly encyclopedic and his
sense of humor was very dry. This often made waiting in the courtroom with him while other cases were handled educational and often pretty funny. He spared neither counsel, court nor client in his whispered commentary.

I developed a great respect for Mr. Mautner, and my sympathy and best wishes go out to his family.

We lived across the street from the Mautners. Nice family with four sons. The youngest would come over and spend time with my step dad Bud Morck. Your dad liked the law and did a great job as Napa DA

I just learned of Jerry´s death and so many memories of him are rushing to mind. I moved to Napa in 1982 shortly before the birth of my first daughter. Not long thereafter I met Jerry at a Napa Women Lawyers meeting. I was impressed that he was a member and began quizzing him about the Family Support Division of the DA´s office which I noted had not been reporting statistics as required to State and Federal agencies. I would eventually go to work for Jerry in the FSD and I never regretted my association with him. He was honest, hard working, sincere and fair. As a young woman in law, I appreciated being hired, given the opportunity to lead and being supported by Jerry.
I rarely got to see Jerry after we both left the Napa DA´s office which I regret. Jerry was funny, caring and real. My fondness and respect for Jerry live on.
My condolences to Jerry´s family.

Jerry was a true gentleman for those of us lucky to know him. For others, his somewhere seeming gruff exterior at times led some people to believe he didn´t care but the truth lay far away from this perception.

He dedicated his working life to helping the "little guy" and had a keen sense of fairness and justice as a career prosecutor in his efforts to protect society.

I was privileged to know Jerry and would not have had my career of 31 years in the Napa County DA´s office, including 18 years as the elected District Attorney, had Jerry not recognized an unknown and inexperienced young lawyer when he hired me in 1985.

I will be forever grateful to him for how he shaped my career in my first 5 years under his leadership.

Jerry and his wonderful wife Elizabeth both served us with Elizabeth representing the rights of elders for many years and inspiring my taking the lead on such issues as DA.

May you rest in eternal peace Jerry alongside Elizabeth. Your life was well lived and we and our community are far better for your service.

Jerry Mautner was the best D.A. that served in Napa County. His legal mind was like a steel trap and he could quote case law and not have to look it up in the law books. He also had a good sense of humor and was quick in his response. He loved his family and was a good boss. It was my pleasure to have worked for him.
