Charles Brashears Obituary

Known as the owner and proprietor of The Wild Bird House in Naperville, Charles "Chuck" Brashears (age 78) passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 in his home. Always a nature lover, Chuck and son Brandon operated the Wild Bird House business in the Gartner Plaza where he assisted many customers with providing products related to birds and their environment. His friendly personality easily turned strangers into friends. A native of Evansville, IN he graduated from Bosse High School in 1962 and was involved in Thespians and cheerleading. Many summers were spent at YMCA Camp Carson in Princeton, Indiana where he participated as a camper and eventually became a counselor throughout his high school years. He attended Hanover College for two years and then graduated from Indiana University in 1966 with a BS in Zoology and a Minor in Business. After graduation he took a position as an epidemiologist with the Chicago Public Health Service. During employment he joined the Air Force Reserves where he served in the O'Hare Hospital Reserve Unit. Shortly after entering the Reserves he became a Supervisor with Johnson & Johnson and was involved with opening a baby products plant in Lemont as a manager. In 1973 he moved to Ohio where he was employed with Avon for six years. In 1979 he accepted a position as Plant Manager for two Pillsbury plants in Terre Haute, IN. and then transferred to Springfield in 1984 to manage the bakery mix and flour mill operations. In 1987 he was recruited to become Plant Manager for RJR/Nabisco at the Butterfinger and Baby Ruth plant near O'Hare. In 1996 he became the General Manager for Georgia Pacific box operation. After retirement in 1999, he opened the Wild Bird House in Aurora on Eola which then moved to Naperville's Gartner Plaza. He loved to travel, golf with friends and took many enjoyable camping trips with his brothers including a three-month adventure to Alaska. He also traveled to Europe, Australia, and Nova Scotia, making great memories along the way. He was a long-time member of Grace Methodist Church. With his love of birding, he enjoyed helping people select bird products and install ponds. Chuck was a wonderful neighbor for over 28 years. We always enjoyed the parties he hosted and talking to him while working in the yard. Memories include his great line dancing, Alaska party complete with his camping food, building his deck and his good nature. He will be missed as a wonderful husband, father and friend.
