Roslyn E. "Roz" Swanstrom (nee Riha), age 84, passed away peacefully at her Aurora, IL home on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. Roz was recently preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, John, her sister, Joanne Ireland and her sister-in-law, Marjorie Prussing. She will be sadly missed by her children, Susan Szymanski (Bill Kuchenbecker), Ron (Mary) Swanstrom, and Janet (Pat) O'Driscoll, grandchildren, Laura (Kevin), Matt (Ashley), David, Trevor, Mia, Ciaran, Emma and Grace, and great-grandchildren, Bree and Teagan, along with her nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roslyn was born to Clarence and Elsie Riha on November 15, 1937. She grew up in Berwyn, IL. Roz enjoyed sewing, dancing, and working on school plays. After the death of her father when she was twelve, Roz and her mother remained in Berwyn until she graduated from Morton High School. She then headed to North Central College in Naperville to study home economics.
She met John at North Central, and they were married in 1958. Upon John's graduation they set up a home and started a family in Naperville. The couple joined Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where Roz was a long-time member of the altar guild. She was also a member of various Home and School Associations, Junior Women's Club, and The Naperville Heritage Society.
Roz followed in her mother and stepfather's (John Valha) footsteps by working for Marshall Field's for several years. Later she opened her own quilt shop, Country House Quilts, in St. Charles. Along with selling quilting supplies she taught lessons. A highlight for her was working on the Illinois State Quilt which can be seen at the Governor's Mansion. She also volunteered at Naper Settlement and later served on its board. Because of her love of antiques and history she joined the local Questers group.
Roz was an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed numerous trips to Ireland to visit her Irish grandchildren. Her companionship, support, sense of humor, and frequent treats from the kitchen were enjoyed by all.
Roslyn leaves a legacy of love to her family, her church, and community. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, July 25, 2022, 10:00-11:00 AM at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 815 S. Washington St., Naperville, IL 60540, (630) 355-2522.
