Dear Waslo family,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of Steve. I knew Steve through his long-term volunteering at the Morton Arboretum, more specifically the Friday morning Heritage Trail group. I can say I am proud to have worked side-by-side with Steve for countless years pulling Buckthorn, Honey Suckle, and other invasive species that we were charged with removing. Steve´s enthusiastic, spirited, and convivial personality made our workdays that much more enjoyable. We never tired of hearing about his Pennsylvania roots, the exciting overseas travel destinations his earlier career took him to, his Colorado high-country hunting trips, or his uncommon expertise on native plants and species. In fact, his expertise on the latter made Steve our go-to, in the field reference guide as to which plants were "good plants" or invasive plants that required removing. Even when highly trained Arboretum staff accompanied our work crew they would many times turn to Steve for second opinions. His insights were that valuable. I also worked side-by-side with Steve at several Arboretum Beer Festivals. While I am a decade or so younger than Steve was, I was impressed at his enthusiasm for participating in a wide variety of activities such as the beer festival that attracts a much younger demographic. I remember thinking I hope I retain that young-at-heart attitude when I reach his age. Finally, I will remember most his final few years when his appearance on Fridays became less frequent. Those days he did come he clearly labored with his "bum" knee and needed to move more slowly than the rest of us. But when he clearly could have stayed home due to health reasons, his Toyota 4-Runner would surely show up and he would slowly put on the "chaps" and "field gear" he so loved to wear and contribute in any way he could. He never complained about his health but instead demonstrated an exuberance and zest for live that is truly admirable and I will always aspire to. Truly a loss of a good friend.
