Gary Courville Obituary

Dr. Gary C. Courville

Naples - With profound sadness, we announce that Dr. Gary C. Courville passed away on August 14, 2020. Gary was born on February 23, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan to Dr. Charles J. Courville and Nona E. Courville (née Maten). Gary put himself through college and medical school at the University of Michigan. He met his wife, Heidi, a nurse, at the University of Michigan hospital when he began his internship in internal medicine. The couple married in 1978 and settled in Saginaw, Michigan, where Gary opened a solo medical practice, with Heidi managing the office.

In 1992, Gary and Heidi relocated to Naples, Florida with their three children. After initially joining a group practice, Gary returned to his roots as a solo practitioner. Over the next several decades, he and Heidi had the privilege of knowing and caring for a great number of Neapolitans. Many long-term patients especially appreciated the rare small-practice experience.

Upon being diagnosed with glioblastoma in January 2020, Gary was forced to abruptly walk away from his life's work as a physician. Practicing medicine was who Gary was, what he loved, and precisely what he was meant to do. Highly analytical, he enjoyed working through difficult cases, as well as the constant learning required to keep up with advances in the field. Even after he knew he would never treat another patient, he could still be found poring through medical journals.

Gary's high energy levels were legendary. He loved running, boating, fishing, travel, jazz, reading, wine and cigars. He was also an adventurous foodie, with a particular weakness for curried goat. At home, his two dogs, Lily and Olive were never far from his side. He spent most of his downtime with his family, who will cherish their memories of his many Sundays behind the grill, his grandchildren splashing in the pool behind him. Gary was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. He was always willing to help, and to put others ahead of himself. He was a man who made his own path in life.

Gary is survived by Heidi M. Courville (née Levi), his wife of 42 years, their three children, Haley Courville, Patrick Courville and Sarah Kurek (née Courville), four beautiful grandchildren, Emily, Gracie, Anna and David, all of Naples, and his brother, David Courville, of Rochester, Michigan. His place in our family can never be filled; there will always be one missing at our table.

Dr Courville was a very caring Doctor. I had the privilege of Dr. Courville being my doctor for several years and he listened to my concerns and treated me kindly. I will miss Dr. Courville very much.
But I will see Dr. Courville when he is resurrected.

Im shocked and saddened to read that Dr Courville died! He was an excellent doctor who listened and spent time finding answers to often complicated questions for my family member. I was present for the doctor visits as the care giver to my family member for years and the kindness and love felt from the entire staff and Dr Courville himself spoke volumes to the level of care received. I will be forever thankful to him for personally showing up in NCH hospital when my loved one needed to be there. Similarly? I tell the story often about how Dr Courville was visiting his patients in the hospital AND going to his office in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, despite (or because) there was no electricity or ability to email records and no elevators. We had to get a new Rx from him by walking up flights of stairs to his office and manually drive it across town to a new oxygen company in order to get more tanks of oxygen because my family member´s oxygen company ran out of tanks before the storm and had no internet to access records and no delivery people after the storm- and they had sent most of their tanks to Hurricane Harvey. Dr Courville extended the life of his patients but also gave them quality of life by treating them with the dignity we all deserve. I pray for him and his family and loved ones. Im glad to know he is able to reunite my my loved one in Heaven.

Dr. Courville was more than a doctor to me, he was my friend. He LISTENED, and with his kindness and help, brought me through some pretty stressful, sad and hard times I went through. I know that he treated all his patients as people, with special care, not just numbers
I truly was sad when I learned his office had closed, not knowing why, and was assigned to another doctor. Learning of this now, I believe he is healthy again, at peace and watching over each and every one of his patients.
My thoughts and prayers are with Heidi, the kids, and all the family. May God bless them and keep them safe

Remember all the 3am phone calls to Gary when one of his patients was in the emergency room. He was always in a good mood and only wanted to do the best for his patients. Very sad...he will be missed!

I can truly say how honored that I have been to call Gary my friend since I came to town in 1999. When I was homesick missing my friends and family, he encouraged me to keep my chin up and to keep going. Gary and I shared weekend call together covering each other’s patients in the hospital for well over a decade. What a brilliant mind he had and always had an incredible passion to learn. Our community lost a beautiful soul but will he never be forgotten. I’m hoping that he’s catching some big fish on his boat up in heaven. I will miss you my friend.

Gary was a mensch, a good soul, salt of the earth.
Always willing to lend a hand, to give good advice, or to wave "hello" from across the room. I enjoyed talking with him for over 25 years.
What a good soul.
He shall be missed.

I was a patient of Dr. Courville for many years. I was always grateful for his down-to-earth, common sense approach. Fortunately, I was always in good health under his care. It wasn't until he treated my elderly mother, who had numerous medical problems and dementia, that I fully appreciated his compassion and caring. He was so patient with her and generous with his time. I will always be grateful for the comfort and reassurance he was able to give her.

As a patient for about 20 years - and a fellow Michigander - I found Dr. Courville to be not only an excellent physician but also very pleasant in his manor.
When he stopped seeing patients, I was disappointed as he had been so helpful to me for years - I didn't want to lose him. My sympathy goes out his family as we have all lost this wonderful man.
