McKenzie was a founding member of the international Percussive Arts Society and initiated the Matched Grip movement in the United States.

Devoted husband of Patricia for 60 years; extraordinary father of six: Janet Graber (Stephen) of Morgantown, WV; James McKenzie (Julie) of Mequon, WI; Judith Cassidy (Jack) of Lehigh Acres, FL; Jill Trees (Joseph) of Bonita Springs, FL; Julia Furlong (Matthew) of Galveston, TX; and Jennifer Barkley (Phillip) of Gainesville, FL; adored grandfather of 16; and darling brother of Billie Jean White (Joe) of Rogersville, MO.
