Lynne Capezza Obituary

Lynne Steinbauer Capezza

AGE: 68 • Wall

Lynne Steinbauer Capezza, 68, of Wall Township, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015.

"Dr. Lynne," as her beloved students called her, was born in Jersey City and grew up in Hasbrouck Heights. She lived in Bradley Beach before moving to Wall in 1983. She was a graduate of American University, received her Master's Degree from Montclair State University and her Ed.D. from Rutgers University. Lynne worked for the New Jersey school system for 42 years, using her education and passion for teaching to counsel and mentor countless New Jersey youth. Her love of education could only be matched by her love of family, including her devoted husband and two sons. Lynne lived a profoundly satisfying life, and took great pleasure in spending her free time as an active member of the Avon United Methodist Church, volunteering for the Jersey Shore Cancer Support Community, organizing fundraising walks, staying physically fit, and spending time at Spring Lake beach.

Lynne was predeceased by her father, August Steinbauer. She is survived by her mother, Josephine (Williams) Steinbauer. She is also survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Michael J. Capezza, her son Stephen Capezza of San Francisco, CA, and her son and daughter-in-law, David Capezza and Kristin Beyard of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her brother, John Steinbauer, of NY State, as well as other relatives and friends.

Visitation will take place at O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Route 35, Wall, NJ, on Sunday, November 8, 2015, from 2 - 6 PM. The funeral service will be held at Avon United Methodist Church, 507 Garfield Avenue, Avon, on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 10 AM, followed by interment at St. Anne Cemetery, Wall. Dr. Steinbauer-Capezza was my former guidance counselor at Central Regional many years ago and she was a very influential person in my life and I wish she was around now. I’m getting my doctorate and education I think she would be very proud.

I am very sad to her of the passing of Dr. Capezza, She was my amazing and beloved guidance counselor at Central Regional, who I retained a close relationship with throughout college, and even past that. If I ever had business at Central, mandatory was a visit with her. My first two years in high school I did dreadfully poor. I didn't care. I was supposed to be in the Honors program, but I goofed off and they put me in classes so easy I was bored and was rebellious and a kid. I always spent a lot of time in guidance, and my friend Cindy Meekins worked there and suggested I change my counselor to Miss Steinbauer. I always called her Miss Steinbauer, she originally didnt use her married name at school. Some teachers do that to avoid confusion. It's just what I was used used to, but I eventually affectionally called her "Dr. Steinbauer hyphen Capezza.". She recognized my potential and placed me with the best teachers and I began to thrive. She made sure I had everything I needed when I went to college, even though I had graduated two years prior. I was an all A student for the most part in college. I last saw her last at the Central Regional graduation in 2009. I think she retired that year. I was under the tent of officials as the President of the Seaside Heights Board of Education. I said to her "Did you ever think we'd be in this capacity together, from the street to the suite." She laughed and was proud of me for all my accomplishments. She used to bring her sons to school, and I remember them both. We were far closer most other students would be. She cared for me and took pains to make sure I got a quality education. I majored in Education because I wanted to be a Guidance Counselor like Dr. Capezza. God Bless the family and friends in their bereavement.
