Margaret Dugan Sandman, of Naples, FL, formerly of Albany and Harrison, NY, died onWednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Chateau at Moorings Park, Naples at the age of 91.
Born in Albany on May 5, 1919, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Anna Walsh Dugan. She received her B.A. from the College of St. Rose and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University, specializing in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. Following her graduation, she taught deaf and hard of hearing children in the Albany Public Schools. She and her husband were seasonal residents of Naples from 1987 until 1994 when they became full time residents.
She was active in community affairs, fund raising and charitable activities, including serving as a trustee of the College of St. Rose and as the president of its Alumnae Fund. She was also a trustee of St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York, Westchester Branch, Harrison and was president of its auxiliary.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Edgar A. Sandman; her children, Paul W. Sandman and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Sandman of Wellesley Hills, MA, Nancy M. Sandman of Wellesley, MA, James J. Sandman and his wife, Elizabeth D. Mullin of Washington, DC, Jean S. Manthorne and her husband, A. William Manthorne of Windham, NH, and John M. Sandman and his wife, Barbara E. Jones of Delhi, NY. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
The family would like to express its deep gratitude to Mrs. Sandman's dedicated caregivers, Quenita Harris and Princess Graham.
Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Albany, NY.
Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Edgar A. and Margaret Dugan Sandman Scholarship at The College of St. Rose, 432 Western Avenue, Albany, NY 12203.
