Dr. Ralph Edward Peterson, M.D. Panama City, FL
Dr. Ralph Edward Peterson passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, in the arms of his eldest daughter, Laura Peterson. He fought a long and hard battle with cancer, and passed peacefully at age 82 at his condominium overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kraft Peterson; his sister, Florence Harves; his four children, Laura Jo Peterson, Carolyn Peterson Richter and her husband, Werner, Bradford Alan Peterson, and Donald Edward Peterson and his wife, Karen; and grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth Peterson, Iris Adela Peterson, Anna Josephine Peterson, Patrick Sebastian Richter, and Daniel Peterson Richter. He is also survived by four stepdaughters, Claudia Kraft, Jordi Clark and her husband, Steve, Kerry Edelman her husband, Richard, and Julie Davidson and her husband, Greg; and grandchildren, Julia Gaskins, Jessica Govic, Ericka Edelman, and Vesta and Roark Davidson; and a great-granddaughter, Astrid Gaskins.
His first wife, Elizabeth 'Betty' Peterson, predeceased him, having passed away in 1982 at age 49. His first son, Brian Peterson, passed away in 1958 when he was one year old. He believed he would be reunited with them on his passing.
Dr. Peterson would want to be remembered for his love of music and dancing. He and his wife, Dorothy, together were active in the Gulf Jazz Society, the Panama City POPS, and the Panama City Music Association. He believed in education above all else, for women equally as for men, and was a patriotic American. At his last home, he proudly flew the American flag.
Ralph was a first-generation American. His parents, Oscar and Astrid, were born in Sweden and came to the United States as young teenagers. Ralph knew at age six that he wanted to be a doctor. After graduating from the University of Oregon Medical School, he elected to join the United States Air Force in 1956 and entered as first lieutenant. He served at Clark Air Force Base in Manila, Philippines, from 1960 to 1966, where he was promoted to the position of Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. He practiced medicine in Naples, FL from 1968 to the end of his medical career, and also served in the National Guard, from September 10, 1977 until his 60th birthday on July 14, 1991, when he retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel. He was awarded the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was certified by, and one of the first doctors to be recertified by, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He was also a Member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a Member of the American College of Surgeons, a Member of the Bay County Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, and a Member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity which he pledged at Oregon State University.
Ralph was most proud of letters of commendation he received from Walter Reed Army Medical Center during his service at Clark Air Force Base for the quality of the condition of the preparatory work that his team of orthopedists at Clark performed on the limbs of wounded soldiers, so that they would be in the most favorable condition possible for further operative and rehabilitative treatment when they arrived in the United States.

I was run over by a semi in Bonita Springs Florida ,dr. Peterson was my primary doctor .he put me back together when I was literally crushed . my legs , my feet my hands, My Arms, my pelvis bone was broken 3 places .he took my hips out and put them in my right leg to save my leg .I was in Naples Florida for 2 years in the hospital. he would not let them take me out of the hospital. even though they wanted to transfer me to a nursing home. I was only 33 years old he was not even on duty the night he was walking through the hospital. when I came in the mergency room . he saved my life and he saved my limbs. they were going to cut my legs off. he told me if I would not sue him later, if he had to cut them off ,he would try to save them. I have walked ever since. I am now 63 years old .and I still can walk barely anymore but I can still walk ,on my legs. the man literally saved my life.. he worked on me everyday in the hospital for 2 years....( when I got out I could not afford the medicine)( that I needed for an infection in my leg he paid for it out of his own pocket) he said he was going to write a text book about my surgeries .and had me sign a piece of paper giving him permission to write the book . I never saw the book if he ever wrote it . it would be nice to have a copy. my name is Clayborn Lewis and I want the family to know that he was a great great man in my book .and he will be deeply missed. I know this is an old obituary, but I'm hoping that the family will get a chance to read what I have written. so they will know that there are people out there like me ,that he has literally saved and change their lives, in a way that I cannot express. he was in a very good person and I'm sorry he's gone.

We send our sympathy, thoughts & prayers @ this difficult time. We admired Dr. Peterson as he cared for my father on several occasions. Dorothy, we have so many memories of you and your girls at Emmanuel. Elvi told me about the competition between you & Sylvia Boynton for who had the most girls @ those Mother-Daughter Banquets. May your family always treasure your wonderful memories.

Ralph was my friend for almost 45 years. I urged him to join the Florida Army National because of the great person he was and because he had served a decade in the Air Force. He was a people person and his patients adored him as a person and for his exceptional surgical skills. My plan is to be in the Sarasota National Cemetery for his service.

I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Peterson for saving my left foot when I cut it off in a bicycle accident two blocks from the Naples Florida pier in February 1971. Every doctor I've gone to since has marveled at the work he did in saving my foot and his expert work with my ankle. I thank him with all my heart.

Dr. Peterson, may the comforting peace of God be upon your family and friends as they journey through this grieving process. It truly was an honor meeting you, and a joy in meeting your son and daughters. I may never be able to touch and improve as many lives as you did in your lifetime, but at least now I have a goal to strive for.
