Stanley Edward Gitlow

Naples, FL

Stanley Edward Gitlow, MD died in the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Lynne Hennecke, on Monday, June 19, 2017 at home in Naples, FL. He was 91 years old. He is also survived by two sons from previous marriages, a grandson, a sister, a step-daughter and step-granddaughter.

Dr. Gitlow was Clinical Professor of Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and American Board of Internal Medicine, 1957-1977. He was the second president of the NY Medical Society on Alcoholism and president of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism. He was on the editorial board of two journals in the addiction field and involved in teaching addiction medicine at the University of Utah, Rutgers University and others.

He chaired the Committee on Alcoholism for the NYS Medical Society for nearly three decades. He was an expert consultant on drug dependency for the US Department of State and Vice Chair and Chair of the Board of Professional Medical Conduct of the State of New York.

Dr. Gitlow published 233 scientific papers, textbook chapters and a text on alcoholism as well as papers with his wife, Dr. Lynne Hennecke, on the etiology of alcoholism. Awards included the Malvern Institute Citation of Merit in the Humanities, the ASAM Annual Award, the Richard J. Caron Award for Excellence, the William Dock, MD Master Teacher Award in Medicine and the SECAD Award.

Dr. Gitlow was a resident of New York, NY, Naples, FL and Nantucket, MA. A memorial service is planned for the fall in NYC.

His unceasingly steadfast love for you will inspire: from watching you two at the tennis courts to sharing a dinner table at Naples social clubs.
