Freda Seltzer Obituary
Freda Primrose Seltzer
April 19, 1929 - June 12, 2022
Freda Primrose Seltzer passed away at age 93, at UMC Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, from head injuries sustained in a fall at her home. She died peacefully, with her husband and children at her side. She will be forever remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, sharp mind, and adventuresome spirit, and will be missed by all who knew her.
Freda was born in Enfield, a northern borough of London, England on April 19, 1929 "Primrose Day". She was the only child of parents Sarah Armstrong Farrow of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and Frederick Farrow of London. As a youngster, she and parents managed to survive the intense bombing of London (the "Blitz') by the German Luftwaffe and subsequent V-1 and V-2 rocket attacks, many aimed at a nearby munitions plant. She attended technical school to become a dressmaker, then after learning Gregg shorthand, changed careers to become a secretary, working at the London Brick Company before emigrating to Toronto to join relatives and work there. She later moved to New York City, where she worked for executives at Standard Oil (NJ) (now ExxonMobil) in Rockefeller Center. It was there she met her future husband, Wayne, an engineer on loan from Esso's New Jersey refineries. They were married November 22, 1958 at Fifth Street Methodist Church in Harrisburg, PA, Wayne's hometown. Subsequently they lived in New Jersey, Maryland and New Canaan, during which time she devoted her energy to rising their two children. After they left home for college, Freda again changed careers, becoming a successful Realtor until she retired.
Freda loved gardening and animals, and was always ready for new adventures or learning new skills, such as learning to ski in Vermont, or playing tennis with friends in New Canaan. While in England, at age 17 she took flying lessons in an open cockpit "Jenny" biplane, and with limited resources, traveled around continental Europe, before emigrating on her own to the Americas. Freda was a wonderful mother and homemaker and made every place they lived an inviting home. She was always active and never shied from hard work, frequently making or tailoring clothes, and even wielding a small chainsaw in the garden late last year.
Freda is survived by her husband of 63 years; Wayne J. Seltzer of Las Vegas, Nevada, daughter; Suzanne S. Akers and son-in-law; Kenneth D. Akers of Portola Valley, California, son; Wayne F. Seltzer of San Jose, California, granddaughter; Carolyn S. Akers and grandson; Kenneth W. Akers, also of Portola Valley
