ALLEN HOHNROTH Obituary

ALLEN LESTER HOHNROTH It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Allen Lester Hohnroth, 81, on March 19, 2025, in Santa Clarita, Calif. Allen was born July 2, 1943, to Lester and Floy (Maynard) Hohnroth in Nebraska City, Neb. Allen, along with his older brother Roger (d 2001), grew up on the family farm outside the city. He attended the one-room Baker school and graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1961, serving as the class president. Allen was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA), serving as president in 1960 and secretary in 1961. During his high school years, he worked at the local radio station KNCY where he got the radio bug!! He also learned to fly planes, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Upon graduation, Allen enlisted in the National Guard and upon his honorable discharge started his career as an on-air radio personality. His first job was in Alliance, Neb., at a small radio station KCOW and from there moved to Lincoln (KFOR), Denver (KOA) and Kansas City (KAYQ). In the mid 1970s, Allen moved into post production in Hollywood, Calif. He started at Chuck Blore productions, moved to Buzzy's Recording Studio and eventually opened his own post production house, Outlaw Sound in 1984. Outlaw's services included sound for radio and TV commercials (many of which were aired on Superbowl Sunday (California Grapes "Heard it through the Grapevine", Master Lock and Lucky Grocery stores to name a few), movie looping, sound for video games as well as being one of the first Hollywood Studios to offer ISDN services where the talent was in LA and the producers/directors were in other cities/countries. Allen worked with many Hollywood personalities including: May West, George Burns, Charlton Heston, Roy Rogers, Jim Garner, Drew Carey, Bob Newhart, Buddy Hackett, Racquel Welsh and Casey Kasem to name a few. Allen sold Outlaw Sound in 2002. Throughout his career, Allen earned many awards including CLEOS, Mobius and International Broadcasting Awards. Although California was Allen's home, you couldn't take the "Nebraska Boy" out of him. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and U of Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. He found great joy riding tractors and mowing grass at a privately held ranch on Oak Mountain. He loved wildlife and was instrumental in helping to support and protect its habitat. Allen also enjoyed working and supporting several nonprofits including the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and Carousel Ranch. Allen's first marriage to Margitta Martin ended in divorce. He met his second wife and life partner Renee Berlin in 1984. They would have celebrated 41 years of loving, supporting and being there for each other in April 2025. Allen is survived by his wife Renee, his three kitty fur babies: Alvin, Simon and Theodore ("The Boys"), sister-in-law Nancy Hohnroth, niece Carolyn Kucera, her husband Russ and their children and families of Nebraska along with many cousins throughout the country/world. Warm, genuine, gracious, and talented. So talented but charmingly modest about his abilities. He worked with some amazing people - and always held his own. Thanks for all of it , friend.
