HELEN ATTEBERY Obituary

HELEN ATTEBERY 04/12/1936 - 11/05/2025 Helen Jeanine Attebery, 89, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Nebraska City, Neb., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on November 5, 2025. She was born on April 12, 1936, to Ted and Letha (Rakes) McClane. Helen grew up in Union, Neb., and graduated with the class of 1954, later attending business school. On January 12, 1955, she married the love of her life, Marvin Neal Attebery, while he was home on leave from the Marine Corps. Following his discharge, they began their family and built a loving home. Together, they were blessed with four children and shared 67 wonderful years of marriage before Marvin's passing in 2022. Helen was known for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering faith in the Lord. She lived her life with grace, gratitude, and a deep love for others. After raising her children, Helen kept herself busy working in Omaha for the FBI, at Otoe County Courthouse, and as a caregiver for the elderly. She also devoted time to her church and community, helping at United Methodist Church and serving with Otoe County Election Board. Her faith guided her through every season of life and her quiet strength was an inspiration to all who knew her. Helen loved the simple pleasures in life - reading a good book, dancing with Marvin, and being outside, whether she was walking, gardening, or picking and stemming gooseberries. A talented baker and homemaker, Helen enjoyed preparing pies and banana cake for family gatherings, holidays, and anyone in need of a little treat. She had a special way of making sure everyone around her felt cared for. Above all, Helen cherished her family and the time she spent with them. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whose love and warmth made everyone feel at home. Her legacy of kindness, love, and faith will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Teresa (Kevin) Champ, Michael Attebery, Mark Attebery, and Jerry (Martina) Attebery; grandchildren: Denise (Joe) Hinds, Amanda (Stephen) Kinser, Cliff (Allison) Champ, Kenneth (Jadeyn) Champ, Cara Attebery, and Tristan (Erika) Attebery; 11 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Terry, Kirk, Jill, and Joni; special niece Mary; and many other beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin; her parents; siblings Mary, Pat, Ronnie, and Doris; grandson Jake Champ; and great-grandson Ezra Attebery. A Funeral Service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City. Burial followed in East Union Cemetery in Union. The family greeted friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the chapel prior to the service. Memorials may be given to Greater Hope Community Church in Clarinda, Iowa. Condolences may be left at www.gudefuneralhomes.com. Marshall/Gude Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
