Ruby Carpenter Sands, 90, of Tunkhannock, wife of the late Gifford L. Sands died Friday morning, March 15, 2024, in Wilkes Barre.
She married Gifford in 1955 and was a loving mother of three children: Brenda Cappucci married to Joseph of Mehoopany, Norman of McAllen, Texas, and Charles married to Carol of Tunkhannock.
Daughter of the late Earl and Anna Carpenter, Mill City. She graduated Falls-Overfield High School in 1952 before entering the banking industry where she served nearly 50 years at Citizens Bank, United Penn Bank and Community Bank & Trust where she was branch manager in Lake Winola.
She served as treasurer for the Tunkhannock Cemetery Association, Tunkhannock Antique Show, and Tunkhannock United Methodist Church. She was advertising sign secretary for the Tunkhannock Baseball Association for 35 years, and a Life Member of Triton Hose Company of Tunkhannock No. 1.
She had a love for music, reading, sewing and crafts. She was an avid bowler at Shadowbrook Bowling Lanes. She was a member of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church handbell and chancel choirs, and sang with the Wyoming County Chorale. Ruby was a former president of Tunkhannock Borough Council.
Surviving are her children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and siblings: Arthur and Homer Carpenter and Violet Gable.
Family and friends are invited to attend Ruby's funeral service which will be held on Wednesday March 20, at 10 a.m. from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga Street, Tunkhannock. Interment will follow next to her husband Gifford at Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Ruby's name to the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 447, Tunkhannock, PA 18657 or to Triton Hose Co., P.O. Box 765, Tunkhannock, PA 18657.
