We were so saddened to hear about one of our greatest Circleville's neighbor passing. If anyone could make you laugh, it was Hoss. I will never forget our last visit with you when we brought Mom and Dad to Newark and Hoss put the funny hat on my Dad. I never seen Dad laugh so hard. We will never forget our friendship.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

If the greatest use of life is spending it in that which outlasts it, Hoss was a master. He left so many great memories and lessons in his athletes and students that will live on through the years.

Hoss took time out of his busy schedule to drive me to Columbus and introduce me to the coaching staff at Ohio State. I was trying to get a job as a student-manager and this trip guaranteed me the job. This one kind act by Hoss had a tremendous impact on my life.

I will never forget the passion and enthusiasm Coach had for everything he did. His quotes, poetry, wisdom, and humor live on in the lives of all of his former athletes.

God Bless Punch and family

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Hoss was more than a coach. In the spring of my 8th grade year, my family moved to Newark. Hoss taught at Roosevelt at the time. I have never forgotten how he went out of his way to make my transition to a new school a positive experience. The support and confidence which he gave, had more of an influence on me than I ever imagined. Hoss will be remembered by those who were lucky enough to know him.

My condolences to the family. Coach Starr was a great man and will be terribly missed.

May 25, 2011

Coach Starr gave me my start in coaching football back in 1992 and I am now looking forward in 2011 to my 20th year of coaching football in Newark. I missed playing for Hoss by one year as I played the football season of 1967 under Jimmy Allen and Hoss came in the next year. Still, he was a big influence on me before he unexpecttedly asked me to coach at Wilson Middle School with Ron Dierks. That proved to be a great blessing and an example of God's grace.

Hoss was a paratrooper and the respect I had for Hoss led me to volunteer for jump school at Fort Benning in May of 1969 since I wanted to be like him. That led to serving with the K Company Rangers, 75th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade in South Vietnam in 1970 - 1971. Hoss greatly contributed to coming my out on the "right side of the law" as Charlie Snow onced observed, even though I had little direct contact with him until over twenty years later.

Another friend and coaching colleague, Tod King, and I used to get a big kick out of Hoss speaking at the Quarterback club luncheons. I told Tod, "Watch, Hoss say something laudatory about Jody Huffman." And, every time Hoss did. Well, it was deserved and Hoss was the first to honor and respect the players who put it on the line for him and the team. Hoss did not forget what the players contributed and the hard work they put in the game of football.

Tod always was urging Hoss to write a book. What a book that would have been. Hoss was like an old country preacher and he could have woven many a fine tale in book form as he did in his daily voice.

I'm sure the Lord has welcomed Hoss with a "Well done good and faithful servant." As long as there are folks passing on the lessons of our friend and menor, Paul "Hoss" Starr, his legacy will endure on earth.

God Bless Punch and family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Starr's family in this time of loss. My vision is Coach Starr coming in thru the gates of heaven, my mother and all of the Newark Wildcat Boosters ringing those damn cow bells. Coach Starr looks at them with that big beautiful smile, arms open, giving them all a big hug. Coach, you were such a hudge influence on my and other peoples' lives. You taught us the "rights and wrongs" of life. I love you and will look forward to you putting your arm around me again and saying "Barney, how are you doing?"

Great memories, thoughts, and prayers to the Starr family. Coach's Big Red "roots" were forged in steel and shared by many.
The true measure of the Coach is what he said about others and not what others might said about him. "Hoss" had talents and gifts that could have only come from our creator. To have shared those gifts with so many of us is testament to the goodness/kindness of our creator. Coach, we've all been blessed, not where we finish in this life, but what you shared and taught us along the way. The path you left was huge, the grass is still green, and the field remains a hundred yards.
god bless you Coach.

I called him Junior. He was my nephew but I was only three years his senior and we were more like brothers. We went to the same high school and college and then sadly drifted apart but I have always been proud of him and glad that he acheived so much in a life full of joy and teeming with good friends. He was a mentor to many and a man for all seasons. So here's to you, Junior. I am sure that God has given you a pat on the fanny and said to you," You played a great game, Hoss. Well done my good and faithfull servant.

Punch, Kelly, Tom, Jodi and Betsy,
I am so sorry for your loss. Hoss was a great man who I admired as a great coach and true leader. He treated the football players at NHS just like they were his own sons. I will never forget him or the life long memories while playing football on the 1976 team. He taught us how to be great athletes while on the field and how to be gentlemen while off the field. It was a true honor to have him speak at my "Hall of Fame" induction. I will never forget that. My prayers go out to all of you.

With my deepest sympathy and love,
Michael Chandler.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Starr family in this time of sorrow. I did not know Coach Starr personally, but after moving back to Newark, OH in 2004 and having 2 boys in the football program, I learned through dealing with the football program, the parents club (working with his daughter Jodi) and just being aroung White field many many football nights, that Coach Starr was a wonderful man, great mentor and coach. God Bless him for being the man he was. May God Bless and keep his family wrapped in love. Coach you will be truly missed here in Newark. RIP. My sympathy to all

Punch and Family,
I am so sad to hear about your loss. My mother (Terri) often recalled all of the fun that she had attending all of my brother's (Rod Barndollar) football games. I think it was one of the most happy periods of her life. Hoss played a big part in that sense of joy. He gave his players and parents lots of encouragement while they were students and he didn't forget about them later in life, like when you both attended my mother's wedding and when Hoss called Rodney and me when he heard that my mother had died. Little things like that mean a lot. He will be sadly missed by all of us who were blessed to know him.

I have great memories of Coach. Physical Education, Drivers Education, and of course football. Coach Starr was a great story teller. Telling about his time as a member of the West Virginia football team and playing with Sam Huff. Playing in the 1954 Sugar Bowl and showing off his ring. Telling about his military experiences was always a favorite during two a days in August. I ran into coach about four or five years ago and had a great conversation. He will certainly me missed by all that knew him. Mrs. Starr, my prayers are with you.

Hoss was Dad's best friend. We all will miss him. He was a hoot all of the time and the car always stunk like cigars when they came back from hunting. Rest in peace Hoss Starr (although I'm guessing the others in heaven won't be so lucky, you'll be whipping them into shape in no time). Take care of my big brother. We love you all.

Pam Firich

May 24, 2011

Coaches legacy will live on through all of the lives he has touched. I was a cheerleader in 74-77. I have so many memories of pep rallies, making yard signs and decorating locker rooms. Hoss always made sure we had extra treats for the neighborhood kids that hung out with the team, who he nicknamed "Urchins". It was so neat, many years later, to see those "Urchins" as the new stars on Newarks team. I am sure that Hoss played a big part in making sure those youngsters succeded in life. My sympathies to the Star family and thank you for sharing your Husband and father with all of us.
