Thomas Philipps Obituary

Thomas "Tommy" Evans Philipps

GRANVILLE: A funeral service celebrating the life of Thomas "Tommy" Evans Philipps, 96, of Granville, will be held March 12, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St, in Granville, followed by burial at Welsh Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11:00 a.m. with a Masonic service at 10:45 a.m. provided by Center Star Lodge #11 F.& A.M.

Tom, a retired chemist from Owens Corning Fiberglas Technical Center, died Wednesday, March 04, 2015 at Kendal at Granville. He was born on September 1, 1918 in Granville to the late Thomas W. and Reah Grace (Evans) Philipps.

After graduating in 1936 from Granville High School, Tom received a BA in Chemistry from Denison University in 1940. He dedicated 42 years of service to Owens Corning and secured several patents in reinforced plastics before retiring in 1984. Shortly thereafter, he began the ISORCA consulting firm in composite research that lasted well over ten years.

Tom was a 70-year Mason, member of the American Chemistry Society, SAE Fraternity at Denison University, and past member of the Republican Central Committee. He also was a former barbershop quartet member of the SPEBSQSA. Tom enjoyed bowling, baseball, fishing, hunting, golfing, woodworking and traveling. He was a true Welshman and proud of his heritage. He was also an ardent Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeye fan. A brilliant, yet humble man, he was most of all a loving husband, father, and role model.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Aileen (Simpson) Philipps of Heath; daughters, Barbe (Greg) Helwig of Granville, Janet (Bob) Procida of Newark, Carol Philipps of Newark, and Nancy (Dan) Waits of Manassas, VA; grandchildren, Kelli, Kim, and Korynne Waits, and Erich and Tristan Helwig; brother, Lloyd (Rhea) Philipps of Granville, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Mary Villars and Wilma Hughes; and brother, Samuel D. Philipps.
