Born in Washington, N.C., he was a graduate of P.S. Jones High School and honorably served in the U. S. Navy. He continued his studies at Fordham University attaining a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Manhattan College. He was a retired Superintendent of Signals for the New York City Transit Authority.
A life celebration service will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at Piney Grove AME Zion Church with the Reverend Robert Little, Jr., pastor, officiating. The interment with military honors will follow in the Ellison-George Cemetery, Harlowe Community of Havelock.
James is survived by his son, James Edward Ellison Jr. of Huntersville; one daughter, Sarah Ann Ellison of Middletown, N.Y.; one sister, Frances Inas Ellison of Havelock.
