Mrs. Tinga was born on February 20, 1920, daughter of Annie Hill Holmes Slocum and Dr. Robert Barnard Slocum. She lived in Wilmington her entire life. She attended Women's College, now UNC-G, from 1938-1942. After college graduation she taught Home Economics in Beaufort, N.C. for a year, then at NHHS in Wilmington from 1943-1946. She also taught at Hoggard High School from 1971-1981. She married I. John Tinga of Castle Hayne on May 13, 1942. Mrs. Tinga was an active member of First Pres-byterian Church from 1942 until her death. She taught Sunday school, was a circle chairperson and received the Presbyterian Women's lifetime honorary life member-ship, given by the First Presbyterian Church women for outstanding church service, on May 14, 2002.
Mrs. Tinga is survived by her husband of 66 years, Mr. I. John Tinga. She has two children, Dr. John H. Tinga, an obstetrician/gynecologist with wife Nancy in New Bern, N.C., and Anna T. White, a nurse practitioner with husband William in Chapel Hill, N.C. Her two grandchildren are Anna Tinga Bright of Hanahan, S.C. and Brian J. Tinga of Raleigh, N.C. Her great granddaughter is Abigail Marie Bright. Her sister is Grace Payson Slocum of Wilmington, and she is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements include a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, at An-drews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A memorial service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 18, at First Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the church's Gilmore Hall.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the charity of one's choice.
