She was a native of Savannah, Ga., a student of music at The Julliard School of Music in New York and the Boston Conservatory and a graduate of Hampton University. She was employed with the Goldsboro and Jones County school systems as a music and English instructor until she retired to New Bern, where she was a musician for First Missionary Baptist and Rue Chapel AME Churches.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at First Missionary Baptist Church, Cypress Street, with the Rev. J. L. Cooper officiating. Burial will be in the Frank Murphy Sr. Cemetery, Pollocksville.
She is survived by two sons, Henry Johnson of Raleigh and Andrew Johnson of Edgewood. Md.; one daughter, Florence Modessa Johnson of the home; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence. Viewing will be at Oscar's Mortuary Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and at the church an hour prior to the service.
