CLEARWATER, Fla. — John Robert Hammond, 88, formerly of Temple Terrace, Florida passed away in Clearwater, Florida on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Born on July 20, 1937, in Decatur, Indiana, he was the son of Carl I. and Edna Kabisch Hammond. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 63 years, Elsbeth (Betsy) Embler Hammond, who passed away on December 18, 2020.
John was a graduate of Decatur High School, Decatur, Indiana and International Business College, Ft. Wayne Indiana. John was a scratch golfer who captured the Decatur City Golf Championship in 1958 and continued playing both privately and corporately well into his seventies. John was associated with a number of companies throughout his business career including: Ohio Oil Company, Findlay, OH; Hammond Brothers Produce, Decatur, IN; Central Soya, Inc., Ft. Wayne, IN, Athens, GA and Newberry, SC; Fred's Frozen Foods, Riverside, CA; Country Skillet Catfish Company, Isola, MS; Singleton Seafood, Tampa, FL; and, Tampa Farm Service, Tampa, FL. In 2006, he was named Florida Poultry Federation Person of The Year for outstanding service to the Florida Poultry Industry.
John is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth A. Hammond of Clearwater, FL; his son, John Matthew Hammond of Huntsville, AL, and his wife Monica Snoddy Hammond; his granddaughter, Dr. Olivia Daly Hammond of Dallas, TX; his grandson, CPT. Patrick Rohrer Hammond of Huntsville, AL, and his wife, Haley Patterson Hammond; brothers-in-law, Jonathan V. (Laura) Embler and Paul F. (Lee) Embler and sister-in-law Janet Embler; nieces, Kathy Hammond (Michael) Boles, Sallie Christen (Doug) Coley, Ann Schnepf (Tom) Pfannerstill, Nancy Hammond French (Cooper Cowart) and Kim Christen; his nephews, Tom Schnepf (Billy Hertz), Dr. Michael Schnepf, Bill (Trudy) Hammond and Phil Hammond. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers-in-law Ruth E. (Bill) Christen, Dorothy J. (Jack) Schnepf; brother and sister-in-law Richard C. (Betty) Hammond; brother-in-law David C. Embler; and nephew Steven Christen.
John requested that no formal services be held. The family is planning a private Celebration of Life. Memorials may be made to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 2675 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor, Fl 34684.
