BARDSTOWN, Ky. — Margaret Land Keitt Smith, 88, of Louisville, Ky., passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025.
Born on December 29, 1936, in Newberry, S.C., she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lawrence Keitt, Jr.
Margaret graduated from Maryville College in Maryville, TN, and later from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, V. She began her career teaching kindergarten in Charlotte, N.C., and later devoted several years to caring for her two children. Before retiring, she shared her love of music as a piano teacher in La Grange, Ky., where she joyfully guided many students.
A lifelong and active member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Margaret was known for her gentle spirit, steadfast faith, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Howard Smith, and her sister, Anna Keitt McIlwain.
Margaret is survived by her children, Robert James Smith (Melissa) of Trinity, N.C., and Peggy Keitt Smith Waters of Bardstown; her grandchildren, Troy (Maria Luisa) Smith, Heather Smith, Autumn Harris (Daniel), Noah Waters, Zachary Stone, Andrew Smith, and Connor Waters; seven great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, James McIlwain; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Barlow Funeral Home in Bardstown, Ky. Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until noon, with a service at noon officiated by the Reverend James Wilkinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church of your choice.
