Jean McQuillan Obituary

AVON

Jean A. (Stocklen) McQuillan, 89, of Avon, beloved wife of the late David B. McQuillan, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2024. Born in Hartford, daughter of the late Charles and Calista (Andrews) Stocklen, she was raised in New Britain. She graduated from New Britain High School in 1953 and earned her associate's degree from Green Mountain College in Vermont. As Jean's husband David was an officer in the military, Jean lived in many places, including Washington, DC and Heidelberg, Germany, before moving to Avon in 1996. She started her professional career as a commercial artist and shortly thereafter devoted her full time to fine art, specializing in watercolors. She received numerous awards, and her work has been exhibited extensively in the Northeast, including at The New Britain Museum of American Art and the Connecticut Water Color Society. She is represented in many private and corporate collections. She was a long-time member of the West Avon Congregational Church where, as an avid reader, she enjoyed the church Book Club. She had a quick wit, loved animals, was extremely organized, and had an incredible memory. She was a devoted wife, and a dear friend to many. She leaves her sister Beverly Schreiber and her sister-in-law Merilyn Stocklen, and many nephews, nieces, and grand nephews and nieces. Besides her husband David, she was predeceased by her brother Charles, Merilyn's husband, and her sister Mary Stocklen. A Memorial Service will be held at the West Avon Congregational Church in January, a specific time and date to be announced. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Avon. Donations may be made to the Outreach Fund at West Avon Congregational Church, 280 County Club Road, Avon, CT 06001 to help those in need. The Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center of Avon is caring for the arrangements. To leave condolences for her family please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com Jean A. (Stocklen) McQuillan

As a member of the WACC daytime Soul Sisters Book Club, I mourn the loss of Jean. She rarely missed our monthly Monday lunchtime gatherings where she was always cheerful, always prepared with insightful observations, and - unlike most of us at that hour - always beautifully dressed and coiffed. Jean also memorably shared details about the time she lived in Germany and her many travel experiences. And, for many of us, it was a remarkable experience to visit Jean's home and see her studio and her paintings; few of us knew we had a professional artist in our midst all that time.

My sympathies to the family in this time of loss. I am privileged to live with one of her paintings, so she will always be remembered.
