Matthew Shine Obituary

BRISTOL

Matthew F. Shine, 97, lovingly known as "Pop", passed away on August 24, 2024, at Bristol Hospital after a short illness. He was the loving husband of the late Patricia (Bailey) Shine for 61 years. Matthew was born on July 31, 1927 in New Britain, CT to the late Matthew F. Shine, Sr. and Veronica (Cookish) Shine. He graduated from the accelerated program in New Britain High School in 1945 to enter the military, receiving an Honorable Discharge as Fireman First Class in the electrical division after serving as a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier. He then pursued a career as an electrician for IBEW locals 37 and 90. He culminated his career working for design firms as a project manager responsible for overseeing the design and installation of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems on buildings throughout the state, retiring in 1993. Matthew enjoyed travel, boating, golf, and time spent in his workshop. If you had a project that required attention, Matt was your go-to guy. He had a quiet, gentle spirit and loved nothing more than being surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifelong learner and received his first computer on his 80th birthday. Graduating to a tablet, he often consulted Google to help answer a question or research a topic. He even maintained an active presence on Facebook, reaching out to friends near and far. He kept close contact with friends and family via his cellphone, which he often used to text when he couldn't get them on the phone. Matthew is survived by his son, Timothy (Hillary) and his daughters Pamela Crandall, and Colleen (Michael) Nicastro. His grandchildren Daniel (Danica) Shine, Kelsey (Drew) Silverman, and Sarah and Christopher Nicastro. His great-grandchildren Connor and Graham Shine and Beckett Silverman. He is also survived by Linda Shine. Matthew was predeceased by his wife Patricia and his granddaughter Molly. The family would like to thank the team of professionals at Ingraham Manor for the care and comfort they provided Matthew over the past few years. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28th, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville, with a service held at the funeral home at 11:30 am. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in New Britain, Connecticut. The Bailey Funeral Home of Plainville has been entrusted with the arrangements.
