Peter Kummer Obituary

NEW BRITAIN

Peter L. Kummer, 82, loving brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 1, 2025. Peter was born on November 17, 1942, in New Britain (CT). The son of the late Peter & Theresa (Gombatz) Kummer.

He was a lifelong and devout Catholic, and his faith was very important to him. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1960 and UConn in 1964. Peter dedicated 35 years to teaching in his hometown, beginning at Washington School, Pulaski, and then New Britain High School, retiring in 2001. Throughout his teaching career, he had a major impact in the community, and enriched the lives of hundreds of students. He was treasurer of the New Britain Federation of Teachers Union while he was working, and he continued in the same role for the NBFT Retirees for over the past 20 years. He also was a member of St. Peter's Society and the Austrian Donau Club.

Pete enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the family orchard, and he was a devoted fan of Star Trek.

Peter is survived by his sister Karen Kummer, New Britain (CT), brother, Robert Kummer, New Britain (CT), nephew, Brett Kummer and his wife, Ann, Sarasota (FL), nephew, Kyle Kummer and his wife, Barbara, Plainville (CT), and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, their families and many wonderful friends.

The family would like to send their appreciation to Craig Kopycinski and his family, who helped care for Peter while he was at home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 8, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, 101 North St. New Britain. My deepest condolences for the family. The Kummers were my neighbors in my childhood years. Linda and I spent hours playing in our `secret spot´ in the orchard. I lived at 368 Reservoir Rd. This was in the 60´s. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Karen and Rob. I just heard about your loss. He was my best buddy, especially the my last high school year. He included me in his circle of friends. I think of your family often. Wish I had known earlier as I would have attended the wake. Take care. Love you all. Pam (Neumann) Langer
