CHAMPAIGN - Alan Dale Garth, 72, of Champaign passed away at Hilltop Skilled and Rehabilitation, Charleston, on Thursday (Feb. 20, 2025).
Born in Kirksville, Mo., on Sept. 24, 1952, Alan was raised in Champaign and graduated from Champaign Central High School.
Alan was preceded in death by his mother and his father, Porter and Virginia Garth.
He is survived by his brothers, David Garth of Champaign and Sam Garth of Rantoul; nephews, John (Sonia) Garth and Scott Garth of Champaign; niece, Stephanie (Kevin) Baker of Champaign; five great-nieces; and one great-nephew.
Alan was a sweet and intelligent soul who faced many physical challenges throughout his life. He received assistance with these challenges through the support of the Developmental Services Center until a cancer diagnosis required more advanced medical care.
With a love for architecture, Alan collected postcards and photo books featuring architecture from around the world. He was a huge sports fan, always cheering for his favorite teams, especially the Cleveland Browns, Fighting Illini and Mizzou.
Alan's family loved fostering his love for treats like Cherry Coke, chocolate, sweet tea, cookies and cheese puffs by making sure he had a steady supply. During his time spent at the nursing home, he found comfort in his stuffed cat that he named Barbara.
A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Alan to catsnap.org. Condolences may be offered at morganmemorialhome.com.
