Carol Livingstone Obituary

URBANA - Carol Jean Livingstone, 70, died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 27, 2024, at her home in Henderson, Nev.

Carol was born on Oct. 11, 1953, in Ridgewood, N.J., the daughter of Edward Livingstone and Jane Margaret Krieger. She married Daniel Grayson in August of 1976, and together with him, raised their two sons, Paul and David.

Carol received her bachelor's degree in life sciences at MIT in 1975, then pursued graduate studies at Columbia University, earning a doctorate in 1981 and MBA in 1983. At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she taught in the MBA program and thereafter was appointed as associate provost and director of the Division of Management Information, where she served from 1984 until her retirement in 2012.

Carol loved music and was a talented choral singer. She played in Man of La Mancha at MIT and sang the "Queen of the Night" aria by Mozart at Columbia University. While residing in Urbana, she performed in the choir of McKinley Church, the Coneflowers, the Oratorio Society and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir. She sang in the Great Auditorium Choir in Ocean Grove, N.J., the choir of Grace Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Master Singers.

She is survived by her husband, Dan Grayson; sons, Paul and David; grandchildren, Tiko, Lina and Alan Grayson; daughter-in-law, Fang Li; and brother, James Livingstone.

A celebration of life service for Carol will take place on Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. at McKinley Church in Champaign.

My most vivid memories of Carol are of her bursting into song in our dormitory suite; I can still hear her singing "Side by Side," from Company. She was vivacious and very smart and very kind; she helped me pass one of my physics units (she had already passed it easily) by going through it with me and giving very clear explanations, I was grateful then and remain grateful. She came to my wedding in Ithaca in 1975, which was a gesture I also never forgot. I can imagine the hole her departure has left in her family. I am sorry.
