Heather Mattern Obituary

NAPPANEE, Ind. - Heather Sue Mattern, age 32, of 257 N. Hartman St., Nappanee, Ind., died at 4:21 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, from injuries received in an automobile accident in Marshall County, Ind.

Heather was born March 18, 1977, in Danville, to Russell and Lutitia "Tish" Wells McMillan. She was a graduate of Westville High School where she was valedictorian of her class. She received her bachelor's degree from Olivet University and her master's degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

On May 24, 2003, she married Dustin Mattern in Gurnee at the Village Church.

She has lived in Nappanee for the last five years.

Heather is survived by her husband, Dustin Mattern; two sons, Charles "Charlie" Lawrence and Brennan Lee Mattern, both at home; her parents, Russell and Lutitia "Tish" McMillan of Westville; a brother, Adam McMillan of Westville; and her grandmothers, June Dolores Wells of Tilton and Thelma McMillan of Westville.

Friends may call Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. EST at the church. Pastor Dave Engbrecht and Pastor Justin Lamison will officiate. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heather Mattern Memorial Fund for her sons in care of Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, P.O. Box 206, Nappanee, IN 46550.

Heather was a certified physician's assistant at Goshen Family Physicians.

She was a member of Nappanee Missionary Church, where she attended Ladies' Bible Study and coached in the Upwards Basketball Program. Heather excelled in sports while in high school and college.

Heather was the daughter any mother would cherish to spend the day with making cookies and candy; the daughter any father would delight in cheering for at her volleyball games; the sister any brother would love to hang out with or even helping him to deliver papers. She was the perfect wife for her devoted husband and absolutely wonderful mommy to her precious baby boys.

Heather excelled at everything she did. She was gifted in school, in sports and in her everyday life. She was hardworking, determined, sweet and likable. She was sociable and made friends easily. She led a Christ-centered life.

For everyone whose lives she touched - her family, her in-laws, her friends, teachers, neighbors, and co-workers, Heather will be fondly remembered as a remarkable human being and one of God's most treasured children.

While it's been years since highschool, I had the pleasure of playing basketball against Heather while she was a student at Westville. I can remember how much spirit she had on the court and how she loved to play the game. She had the best sportsmanship and was always very kind to even the opposing team. I was saddened to hear the news about Heather but hope that the family finds some comfort that Heather is in a better place and has left a wonderful legacy.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I grew up playing softball and basketball with Heather and we graduated together! Not only was she my teammate from as early as the little league years she had become a good friend...wish we had stayed in touch despite our busy lives. I am honored that I had the time with you that I did and will cherish all the memories. You are and always will be a remarkable person and you have touched my heart in so many ways.

My prayers go out to Heather's husband and her children and her family. I was an art teacher at Westville while she went to school there. She was such a special young person and I feel honored to have known her if even for such a short time. I'm sure she will be missed by so many people.
