Howard Sweet Obituary

URBANA - Howard "Jim" Sweet, 78, of Urbana passed away at 10:43 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2025) at home surrounded by his family.

Jim was born on April 21, 1947, in Mountain View, Ark., the son of John Henry and Florence Marie (Mabry) Sweet. He married Mary Elnora Scott on June 24, 1983, at Grace Baptist Church in Urbana.

Jim is survived by his stepson, Michael (Jill) Odom; stepdaughter, Kristy (Tim) Mitchaner; grandchildren, Matthew and Misty Odom, Jacob and Autumn Odom and Mary "Katie" and Jacob Jones; great-grandchildren, Parker Odom, Reagan Odom, Chason Odom, Aubrey Odom and Everette Jones; and siblings, Carl Sweet, Ina Weber and Nadine Volner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Mary; and siblings, Dorothy Graham, Ruth Kent, Harry Tripp, Joe Tripp and John Sweet.

Jim worked for Royce & Brinkmeyer Realty in service maintenance until his retirement in May 2025, after 40 years of employment.

He was a member of the AMVETs; a devoted family man, spending time with his family, especially his five great-grandchildren; an avid motorcyclist; and he loved his work and tenants.

There will be a celebration of life for Jim Sweet on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 502 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign.
