James Shilts Obituary

RANTOUL - James "Jimmy" William Shilts, 67, of Rantoul passed away peacefully on Friday (July 26, 2024) at Illini Heritage Nursing Home, Champaign, with family by his side.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Elliott Cemetery. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jimmy was born Aug. 7, 1956, in Gibson City, the son of Reuben and Frances Shilts.  Jimmy's early life was spent mostly in the Elliott area. After his mom's death, he was self-supporting and worked in food service at the University of Illinois and later at the Developmental Services Center in Champaign. He found a loving home at Rockland and Gates Villa in Rantoul. While a resident there, he was treated with love and kindness from the staff. He also found friends, Jack Hart, Vincent John and Helen Mosson, who loved him as he did them. The family thanks all of you.

Jimmy is survived by three brothers, Richard and Bonnie Powell of Paxton, Steve Shilts of Saybrook and Rueben Shilts of Paxton; three brothers who will definitely miss their little brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward Powell, David Powell, William Shilts and Michael Shilts.

Jimmy competed in the Special Olympics in bowling, which he did well in, receiving several medals. Later, he turned to karate as a form of entertainment and exercise, and Jimmy learned to throw punches with the best in his class. He loved watching the Three Stooges, "Star Trek" and kung fu movies.

Throughout his life, Jimmy was loved by all whom he interacted with, and he loved them.  This loving and caring man will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Once again, the family would like to thank the staff at Illini Heritage and Rockland and Gates Villa for the excellent care he received at both facilities as well as the love he was shown. Rest in peace, Little Brother; you will always be in our hearts.

I´m sorry for your loss. I taught Jim in the CU Special Rec Taekwondo class when it was taught with Leaders for Life Martial Arts. Jim was always so happy and and I remember he liked to joke too. I really enjoyed the time teaching him. God bless your family.
