Saint Augustine - Jewel Edward "Buddy" Butler, 86, of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025.
He was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Danville, to Jewel Cosby Butler and Magnolia Butler.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Jewel devoted his career to public service with the Illinois Department of Corrections, retiring in 1996 as assistant director. He also gave back to his community as a youth coach with the Aurora Flyers track team. He lived in Oak Park for 39 years before retiring to St. Augustine in 2016.
True to his name, Jewel was a precious gem to his family and all who knew him, remembered for his strength, faith and compassion.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Andreen Neukranz-Butler; his children from a previous marriage, Francine Butler, Andrea Butler, Maria Hoye, Susie Hunter and the late Jewel Ashley Butler; and his stepdaughter, Jane Kmetz; son with Andreen, Jewel Adrian Butler; stepchildren, Kira Fobbs and Heather Drawhorn; several grandchildren; and his sister, Josephine.
He was preceded in death by his son Jewel Ashley Butler; siblings, Truman Butler and Maria Miller; and parents.
A memorial service will be held in Illinois at a later date. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to a veterans organization or youth mentoring program.
