URBANA - Joan A. Ruthstrom, lovingly known as "Jo" or "Toots", 91, of Urbana passed away at 4:55 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, peacefully at home.
She was born on Jan. 13, 1932, in Champaign, at Burnham Hospital, the daughter of Alva and E. Meree Starkey. She married E. L. "Al" Ruthstrom on Sept. 19, 1964, in Urbana, at the First Presbyterian Church.
Joan is survived by her children and their families: Diane Long (Michael, Michelle), Randy and Di Ruthstrom (Ashley/Heather, Cliff/Katie, Kirstie/Jason), Jeff and Pam Cross (Sierra, Hannah/Rick, Summer), George and Annabelle Cross (Colby) and Jody and Dean Walden. She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Addison, Lindy, Cameron, Drew, Sam, Charlie, Wren and Owen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al Ruthstrom.
Joan's fondest memories include family, traveling, boating, and fishing with Al. She always had a story to tell and several pictures to show of all her adventures. She also loved Elvis, sewing, crocheting, knitting, photography and, most of all, her grand and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her friendly and outgoing personality. Joan never met a stranger. She was a great wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, and friend who will be dearly missed. Although she is gone, she will never be forgotten.
The family would like to thank the team of wonderful women; Shaii, Christina, Ngozi, Rachel and Earlene, that have taken amazing care of Joan over the last year. Joan was known as "Mama" to these special women. The family is happy knowing that Joan and Al are together again sharing their love for one another.
A private graveside service and celebration of life will be held at a later date for the family.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Champaign County Humane Society or Cunningham Children's Home in memory of Joan.
