TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Leathia Blanche Newman, 87, of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away Friday (Jan. 3, 2025) at Westminster Village, Terre Haute.
She was the eldest child of four, born on April 27, 1937, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Robert H. Newman and Elenor Loraine (Bolin) Newman.
Leathia grew up in Richmond, Ind., and graduated from Richmond High School. She went on to earn a teaching degree from Indiana State Teachers College (renamed Indiana State University). She taught middle and elementary levels, and after many years, she retired.
Leathia was also a founding member of World Gospel Church in Terre Haute. Through the years, she was very active on the church's missions committee and in the choir.
She is survived by her sister Nancy Elaine Harralson (Richard Allen).
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Charlotte Hall and Herbert Anthony "Tony" Newman.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E. Springhill Drive, Terre Haute, IN 47802. A funeral service will start at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Ben Burdick officiating. Burial will follow in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Humboldt, at 3 p.m. EST.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the World Gospel Church Missions Program, 900 Gardendale Road, Terre Haute, IN 47803.
